Any Generation X ers here?

I remember when...

...all the cereals had “sugar” in their names and no one squawked about it.

...the news would show flag-draped coffins being unloaded from planes.

...we had to practice nuclear attack drills at school — and then stopped because no one would survive anyway.

...two of my friends at school were (no joke) Rainbow and Sunshine.

... 2 Live Crew got slapped with ”PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICIT LYRICS”

...call waiting was THE new must have tech.

...I hid a gay teen from skinheads chasing him at the store where I worked and the sheriff’s department didn’t think there was a problem.

...my senior English paper was on how our generation was born knowing our own mortality and that was why we were —and would remain — so DGAF. (Somehow I didn’t get an F and my English teacher loosed me on an unsuspecting world as a high school graduate.)

...Dan Quayle put being a dad before politics, saying he would support his daughter no matter what.

...Danny Elfman was the lead singer of Oingo Boingo, not a Disney composer.

Yep, we’ve had it weird. Highs and lows. Don’t know about you all, but I wouldn’t trade what our generation has experienced for anything.

Except New Coke. Why. Just why.

Proud Gen-X'er here! Saturday morning cartoons were the best!! But kids these days have Hulu and Netflix and Disney+ and can watch cartoons all day making them just another show. I remember getting up early and racing to put on the ONE TV we had because realistically Saturday morning was the only time I was going to get to watch what I wanted anyway.

I was in college when the WWW came out and I remember saying no one would ever use that for anything other than porn because it's too slow to be useful. LOL!!! Guess I was not really in touch with the pulse of the tech world -- despite CS being one of my majors. We didn't even have a computer in my house so my first real experience (outside of playing Oregon Trails on an apple IIe in school) was in college and I loved the potential. But back then it was gopher, MUDs/MUSHs and even just email. Usernames were 8 characters and no one used their real name.

I think the biggest difference for me is that when I was a kid, I got on my bike, yelled "I'm leaving" and was gone all day wherever I wanted to be. No phone, no playdates, just go. Now as a mom, I cannot imagine letting a young child just take off without knowing where they are going, who they will be with and one of them having a phone to check in.

I also miss 80s hair, fashion and music!! 90s and 00s just don't have it...
Oh man, I couldn't agree more! I guess I just barely am too young to be a gen x, I was born in '82. Ew, does that make me a millenial?!🤢 My house was THE house on the block, you know what I'm talking about. All the neighborhood kids would run in and out all day long, drinking our kool aid and eating homemade cookies. We would play hide and go seek in the dark, be out all day only to come home to eat and sleep. My mom would yell out the door that is was supper time and no matter how far away we were, we always heard her! Did anyone ever play SPUD? We loved that game!

I would definitely NOT change a thing about my youth. It was definitely the best years for music
And when you could actually joke around and not have someone get "triggeted" lol

We don’t mind... as long as you don’t turn off our music. ;)

My Gen Z child couldn’t believe his Nana and Grandpa were so irresponsible as to let kids ride bikes to the store with no adults and no helmets and “just come back before it’s too dark for cars to see you”.

We also lived in our roller skates. Not roller blades, the actual skates. We even climbed the kitchen counters while wearing them(that's where my mom hid the candy) Yup, candy, pop, chips, eating fast food, all were considered treats and special occasions

No way, that music is the best!
