Any guess? Hen or Roo?

Very much appreciate the feedback. We are new to chicken ownership, so this is all new territory. However, I’m big on research and education, and based on what I’d read I was having doubts it was the pullet we thought we bought. We bought 3 “pullet” “EE’s” originally, but another one of them was also large, had the massive comb, wattles, all black, more defined feathers, stood tall, and started roo-ing, so we used deductive reasoning and rehomed him and two others (convincing pullet EE and pullet GC) with my in laws. But then I started taking a harder look at this pictured alleged “EE” and was having doubts again based on my research. It seems to be the new boss in the absence of the suspected cockerel we got rid of last week. We live around other people so we intended to keep the noise to a minimum, so unfortunately we’ll have to eventually rehome this boy too even though he’s a kid favorite currently! :(

I read on this forum somewhere that the black sex link cockerel’s have a light spot on their head as a chick and the pullets do not, is there truth to this? I wish I had a photo of the one we already got rid of that had the same characteristics as this one, just solid black, but this is a photo of the alleged EE’s 5 days after we brought them home. I don’t remember which was which but they’re the black ones, one of them has the yellow spot on their head.

The white dot shows that they have the barring gene (your cockerel has it, he’s barred). The black chick, if it was a cockerel, was likely a different non-sexlinked breed.

Did you get it from a hatchery?
No, the alleged 3 EE’s and one Golden Comet were the only ones we purchased from TSC. The rest we pre-ordered specially from a reputable local feed store as day-old chicks. The EE’s were more for the kids, for the colorful eggs and so they could “pick” their own from the box at TSC. But it appears we were 2/3 non-egg layers. 🤨
