An old family friend shot one of his dogs. When we asked why, he told us that once a dog gets taste for chicken, it will never stop going after them. He had tried putting the dead chicken around the dog’s neck. The stench often makes the dog disgusted with chicken. It hadn’t worked, so it had to be done. Great dog, but he couldn’t be irresponsible with his flock.I understand how you feel! We got a German Shepherd pup last July and she was good all summer other then charging through them...we went out for supper one night and the girls weren’t locked up yet and she went into the coop and raised he**. We couldn’t find 1 of the 2 missing. The next morning we found the leftovers in her bed. She had found it and eaten it in the short hour we had let her out that morning. About 6 weeks ago I let my guard down and she went into the coop when the girls were heading in for the night and attacked again. This time she ripped most of the feathers out of the back end down to the meat of one of my favorite girls. I didn’t think she’d make it but she’s doing well. I was lucky I came out when I did. I love my girls and I had a hard time with my dog after that. She knew what she did was wrong but I won’t trust her anymore. I’m truly sorry for your loss![]()
She’s too expensive to shoot. Chickens are let out for a short time and monitored now. I let them out and she gives them a wide berth....will never trust her again. After my girls are gone I’m done with chickens. I had a fox problem before Hattie...not worth the stress! An old family friend shot one of his dogs. Of course, he did have the stereotypical mean rooster. It was one legged from a bear attack. As long as you didn’t go towards the rooster, he left you alone.
Chickens are a short lived bet. She’s too expensive to shoot. Chickens are let out for a short time and monitored now. I let them out and she gives them a wide berth....will never trust her again. Ron, All you baked looks SUPER. Especially the sliced BREAD. YUM.
I like recipes like that!I marianated my chick legs. Tonight we will have Lydia's Chicken Recipe. She browns everything, legs, onions, peppers, and then puts them in a baking sheet for a 375 oven. Adds: white wine, and lemon juice. Cook in oven for l hour. My husband purchased he book for me for a birthday present. She is a fantastic cook.
