No, you can use any bowl. I used a basket with muslin lining that came from amazon.

I did use a porcelain cast iron dutch oven.

The bread is very tasty and has a good texture and crust

Yes! I used the oval version. You can see the pattern at the edges of the top crust

I have a round one and this oval one. They still come out round in the round dutch oven. Now I need a oblong baker to match the basket!

You only have to clean it if the dough sticks!

I don't use a cloth with mine, just a heavy sprinkling of flour. Surprisingly, it hasn't been a problem to clean up.
