I do not see salt in the recipe. Do you sneak some in? I do that all the time! I would put a pinch of salt into the frosting too.
You know...I didn't even realize that, but I've never used it! I use salted butter...I imagine if you didn't use salted butter that would make a difference. You could probably safely add a tsp of salt! :)

I edited the recipe to show salted butter. Honestly my MIL made this with shortening and it always tasted good...but I no longer use shortening for anything!

One more recipe for the day! This cake came from one of the cooks at my husband's elementary school. His brother asked her for it and it is a family favorite! It always comes out super moist and tasty! His family likes to put 7 minute frosting or Vanilla Sauce on this!

Mary's Cake
Part 1: Combine:
2 cups Flour
2 cups Sugar
1 tsp. Salt
3 Tbls. Cocoa Powder

Part 2: In a pan combine:
1 cup water
2 Sticks of Butter
Bring to a boil!

Part 3: Combine:
1/2 cup Buttermilk or (1/2c. milk + 2 tsp vinegar)
1 tsp. Baking Soda
2 Eggs beaten

Pour 2 over 1, then add 3 and mix. Pour into a buttered and floured 9x13 pan.
Bake at 350 degree's for about 35 minutes.

Vanilla Sauce
1 cup Sugar
2 Tbls. Cornstarch
2 cups Water
1/4 cup Butter
2 tsp. Vanilla

In a pan combine sugar & cornstarch.
Add water and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
Continue to cook 1 minute until slightly thickened.
Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla.

While still warm pour over individual servings of cake and serve right away! This can be reheated!

7 Minute Frosting (the title is misleading it always takes longer...:) )
In Double Boiler combine:
2 egg whites
1 1/2 cups Sugar
1/4 tsp. Cream of Tarter
1/3 cup Water
2 Tbls. Corn Syrup
1 1/2 tsp. Vanilla

Beat over double boiler with hand mixer until stiff! (my mother in law used to use her hand cranked double whip...I use my electric mixer!

Next time add half a teaspoon of salt to the cake and a good pinch of salt to the frosting.

Salt is a flavor enhancer

After my first time making apple jelly a couple of weeks ago I knew 4 bottles were nit going to cut it. Saturday I boiled down 12 pounds of apples with cinnamon and gathered 18 cups of ruby red juice. Sunday I bottled 11 and 1/2 500 ml mason jars.
The jelly looked lonely so Monday I baked another batch of PLAIN OLD white bread. I always wait for the wife to leave And I can get the mess cleaned up before she gets back.
Making preserves is a lot of work, now I know why people charge so much for theirs.
