Any Home Bakers Here?

Hey bakers! I've got to start rejuvenating my dear starter Lois from her long hibernation in my fridge. I must confess, I did neglect her, so she's got quite the layer of hooch! She's a 100% rye flour starter and yields some fantastic bread. Over the next few days I'm going to be feeding her daily and letting her sit on the counter. I want to make bread soon, but I have to be patient! I've got my second COVID vaccine Friday night so I'll be out of commission for the weekend. I guess it gives more time for my starter to get really great.

Also, I'm rereading (for the 6th time) a really fantastic book centered on a sourdough starter! It's called Sourdough: or, Lois and Her Adventures in the Underground Market by Robin Sloan. I really, really recommend it. I named my starter after the main character! You can find it on Amazon here: the very fantastic book

Now I am looking to kill the
mosquitoes in my rain barrel. Google said veggie oil. Any one have a solution> after the oil...put a mesh or netting to keep more out. Aria
Hi 🙋‍♀️,
If it’s an open barrel that holds water most of the year, and no humans are using it for drinking water here’s what I used to do when I did not live in the desert…

if barrel is more than abt 30 gallons and refreshed regularly and has an open top~ go to local pet store and purchase one or a few feeder goldfish. They’ll eat the larvae and the algae. Throw them a little food once in a while & you'll have some happy fish. They usually cost 50¢ each.

if you don’t want goldfish: put *ONE* small drop of regular dish soap per 10gallons of water. No need to stir. It breaks the surface tension of the water surface so the larvae can’t use their air tube. It also causes the adult mosquito to not be able to lay the eggs either because they can’t perch on the water without sinking (surface tension is compromised). Refresh as often as needed as you use the water/it refills.

There’s also the mosquito dunks.

Never used oil. Mainly bc it really doesn’t break down & it leaves a residue on the container that’s just kinda gross.

HTH, Cayo

beautiful loaf of bread. Aria
Thank you!
Forgetting the noodles isn't terrible. It just means you need to cook the noodles in the soup when you warm it up. This way you can make it chicken and rice soup if you want, or add alot of rice, some condensed cream of chicken soup and pop it in the oven for chicken rice casserole.
Yeah. It’s fine for when I’ll be eating it at home. But some of it was for work/school lunches so i think I’ll just pack some bread in with those containers.
