Generally the difference is the size of the mixer. The tilt heads are smaller while the lift versions go up past 5.5 quarts. I have not had the lift break. I did work one too hard kneading dough and had to add lock washers to the motor. It was an easy fix.

Kitchenaid mixer question for y'all:
We have the tilt head type we got about 5 years ago, works fine. DD1 got the old (and I mean OLD!) Kenwood when we got the KA. Her's is now dying so we will get her a KA for her birthday. Do people have opinions about the pros and cons of the tilt head versus bowl lift KA mixers??
I got a bowl lift one because the old tilt head one of my moms would screw itself so tight after kneading bread that I’d have to put it on the floor and brace it between my feet to get the bowl free.

I have 2. one is 4½ quart, and larger is 5 quart. I do encounter some tight strong holding of bowl onto the base. Usually only when I make a large batch, close to maximum, and the dough is stiff. My 5 quart has a handle on side, so I just wrestle with it or tap it gently with the rolling pin. :old
I like the tilt head type because the tilted head makes removing, and changing hooks easier. :yesss:
Oh,,, there is another simple solution to removing stubborn stuck bowls.
