Any Home Bakers Here?

Anyone on here know much about sourdough starters? I’m trying to determine if this is hooch or mold on the top and if I should save the starter or not.

@ronott1 is our sourdough expert here. Looks like hooch to me but I'm just a novice so I don't know what to do about it. What's the story here? When is the last time you fed your starter and has it been refrigerated or sitting on the counter? Welcome to the thread! :frow (Sourdough Central, lol).

Hey!

I pretty sure it’s hooch, but I’d much rather be safe than sorry. It’s been kept in the fridge, I fed it around three weeks ago. (I know, that‘s quite a while, I‘d forgotten about it. 🤦🏼‍♀️)

I’ve made sourdough with it before that was delicious, and I’d like to make it again. I’ve got my fingers crossed that I didn’t forget about it for too long.

Thanks for the help!

Sure. I mean you're welcome. If it's not PINK it's probably okay. You might ask google what to do with hooch on your starter since ron hasn't replied yet. And then take it out of the fridge, get it to room temp and start feeding it. Feed it twice a day for a few days till it starts doubling in volume within two to four hours, and you're good to go! Be sure to discard all but about 75 to 100 g every time you feed it. That's about a third of a cup. You can also google how to use sourdough discard, it makes good pancakes and biscuits, for example. Feed 100 g warmish water and 100 g of AP flour at each feeding, by weight. If you don't have a scale, give it half a cup of water and a cup of flour. Good luck!
