I made biscuit cups this evening. The bowl with extra syrupy apples is not mine. I swear my housemate is going to go into sugar shock! IMG_4629.jpeg

The syrup is a mix of; butter, cinnamon, sugar, and brown sugar.

Good morning, everyone.

I’m having a rough day today. My potatoes that I was growing in buckets failed. For some reason, the water would not drain, despite me putting drainage holes in the buckets. Underneath the soil that I thought was getting enough water was mud.

I was only able to save about a pound of potatoes. The rest were rotted.

Then, I discovered that my beans may have a disease.

If this is a disease, and if I lose my beans, I don’t know what to do. I’ll be left with just tomatoes and cucumbers. Maybe some carrots if I’m lucky.

A lot of stress for me today.

Jared, We are Not having Growing Weather around here. Things are not growing
well. The strawberries my neighbor usually purchases....were not ripe. Perhaps the weather there has not been good for plants to flourish?

If you have an agriculturist available take one bean plant and ask what is going on.

With the potatoes, I don't know what size holes you drilled as you might need to drill them bigger.

After you drill the holes put some average pieces of gravel in the bottom before the soil and this should make for better drainage.

Good Luck!

The problem is, I used these buckets last growing season, and I did not have this problem. I only had it this year, when I changed the type of soil.

I used the wrong soil, that’s my best guess.

What was the difference in the two types of soil? The soil you used last year drained better.

It's important to write this kind of information down. You think you'll remember, but you don't. I am very guilty of not writing stuff down, and wishing I did weeks or months or years later.

The gravel in the bottom is a good idea. It gives the excess water "somewhere to go" if it can't drain out of the holes in the bottom for some reason.

For your beans... look on the back sides of the leaves for any kind of bug. Get a picture of it/them, if you can.

Sorry you are having problems, Jared, that can be discouraging. I agree that a layer of gravel in the bottom of your planters helps keep the soil from becoming impacted. The change of soil could also be a factor. As in cooking and baking though, I like to think that in gardening there are no failures, only learning opportunities. My mom used to drive us kids (4 of us) from Denver where we lived to Phoenix where her family lived while Dad remained at home to work. This was in the 50's and 60's. Amazingly, she never got lost. We did a lot of "unscheduled sight-seeing" that added hours to our travels, but lost? Never! So I never have failures in my kitchen either. My chickens occasionally get unscheduled appetizers, however! 🤣 So if you learn something from your potatoes, that's not failure.
