Question...I was looking closer at the Scottish Beef Stew recipe and there's an ingredient I don't recognize. Does anyone know what "swede" is? The recipe calls for 1/2 Cup of it peeled & chopped (so I'm assuming it's a veg).

Google says a "swede" is a rutabaga.

"The rutabaga or swede differs from the turnip (Brassica rapa) in that it is typically larger and yellow-orange rather than white. ... In the north of England and Scotland, the larger, yellow rutabagas are called neeps or swede from folk etymology, while the smaller white turnips are called turnips."

You guys are great, thank you!

I was wondering who she was going to get to hold the "Swede" still as she tried to peel him.

And me not knowing any Swedes...figured I might have to substitute a different nationality.

My Dad told us we had Irish in our background, as his grandma came from Ireland. We are a pretty good mix of a lot of things, including a pinch of American Indian from upstate New York area. My sister took one of those Genetic DNA test thingies and it said she was a high percentage of Scandinavian. Turns out great-grandma emigrated from Sweden to Ireland before coming to the US. Not Irish at all.

So @N F C - you do know a Swede! (sorta) and I love rutabagas.
