My aunt used to use cans to bake her date nut bread.

No, I use the bread machine for the dough, and bake using regular loaf pans.

Not sure I understand your question Penny? I've never used a can to bake in, but one of my aunts used to for her date nut bread.

Cooking bread in a can produces a steamed bread instead of a baked bread (at least that's my understanding). Boston brown bread is one that comes to mind.

Yes, they do bake in Cans around New York and Boston. Boston Brown Bread....And some even bake in Clean Clay Pots (the kind you plant plants in)....funny? Strange?....guess it is something some do. I DO NOT. Aria

Penny, It is a recipe for Boston Brown Bread (any brown bread) and the batter is placed in a greased can. Not my favorite. It is a very dense bread and is cut in thin slices. And served with Baked Beans. Old New England Custom.

The baked bean addition is interesting...I've never seen those served with the bread. Maybe a regional thing?
