I am loving the pretzel and Pizza conversation today!
Those are two of the foods I miss from Philly. I can find acceptable substitutions for most of the other stuff, but most places have no clue about those two. Luckily I can make my own scrapple or I can buy a case or two online when I need some.
It seemed nostalgic to me. I do understand the country vs. city life. Out in the country it is hard to get ingredients last minute and it is nearly impossible to get to a restaurant that is good easily.None of those things have anything to do with Philadelphia. Scrapple is PA Dutch, and yet isn’t served at the Dutch Pantry restaurant. I’m surprised you know what it is that close to Jersey.
Pizza is a north Jersey and NYC thing. I must have missed any good food in Philly. Pretzels are a city thing, so I believe you know what a good pretzel should be.
I miss the city life too (my father was PA Dutch, but I’m a Jersey girl). I think more than anything though, I miss not having to do all the cooking (or at least supervising).
Please take all that as fun, not nasty.

I never would have thought of making my own powdered sugar or brown sugar if I hadn’t had to. I learned something new recently, but forget what.It seemed nostalgic to me. It does make you creative with cooking though! What can I sub for the missing ingredient....
It sounds like you are from a place with good food!I was not from the city itself, but the general area. Scrapple is actually a Mid-Atlantic food not just PA dutch since more nonAmish eat it and it is served in most restaurants in the area.
We can't find panhaus here and we have a huge Amish community all around us. I had to learn how to make panhaus myself due to the lack of it available to me here. The closest store that has it is in Maryland or Virginia. In Wisconsin, I just went to the local Amish store and could order it by the case.
Pizza, where I grew up in PA, was a food group on its own. What they serve here as pizza is shameful. Can't get most of my PA foods here. So we make our own. Like most of the foods, I grew up eating they were regional foods.
And most of the places in the city that nonlocals go to get pizza or other local foods are tourist traps. I had my hoagie shop and my pizza shop. The hoagie shop makes their own sweet and hot peppers. The pizza shop made everything fresh daily. The people that owned it when I lived in the area retired and sold the shop. Food from there is not the same quality now.
Most of the recipes I use were learned from various places. Like the Italian Market in Philly had an older Italian lady that taught me how to make pasta sauce from scratch. 'No can make a good sauce." (said with a very thick Italian accent with hand gestures. ) I learned from the best cooks IMO. lol
Anyone else hoping for the pretzel pizza dough recipe?
@PenguinsCraft will you please share the recipe? I most definitely want to try it!
