Wood stove or pellet stove. Fireplaces are too inefficient. A good pellet stove with it's auto igniter can be put on a thermostat offering a nice even heat as long as the pellets don't run out.

A wood stove is nice heat but is cyclical. The temperature goes up when you add wood to the fire and goes down as the wood burns low before the next addition.
Very valid points,,, but there are also other facts:old,, to consider.

Wood pellets; Usually hard to come by FREE, but not impossible.

Good ole wood: Much easier to get FREE. Not for everyone. :(:idunno

During the extreme colds, I run a wood stove inside my garage. I just try to keep a above freezing temperature to provide housing for my feral rescue cats, and winter housing for my chickens.
I fill up the stove, and adjust the draft, so I have a long slow burn.
Yes,, ALL my wood is free. :yesss:
If I was to purchase log/wood bundles for sale at local stores,,, That would be much higher than equal BTU value of wood pellets.
Long ago I considered having a wood stove inside home. There just was not enough room for one inside. I would have had to do too much remodeling to accommodate one,,, so it was not that important. It is different when building NEW, and incorporated into the design.

Yes,, ALL my wood is free.
All of ours is free. Well, except for the gas/oil for the chainsaw. And gas/hydraulic fluid for the splitter. And the $2000 for the splitter, which will outlive us. And the $560 for the chainsaw that we hope will last as long as the last one: 29 years, which is probably longer than we (hubby) will be chainsawing.

But other than that, yup, our wood is free! :lau
