Considering how tight the barring is, I am guessing either he was crossed with Dominique, or one of his grandparents had barring, like a barred rock or barred Holland. Barring can hide depending on which parent gives the barring gene. So the parent could have been a carrier.

But, as I understand it, if both parents carried barred genes to pass on, the white in between the black lines, would be wider on roosters. You have a tight barring (on the feathers that have them.) I have a Dominique Cockerel that has tighter barring than my barred Holland cockerels, but obviously has it all over his body-- but his barring looks dark like that.

You can look up "Dominant black covers for chickens feathering" and probably find some useful stuff. My guess is one or both parents had dominant black.

You would also look up breeds that have single combs and then eliminate based on foot coloring and that can get you a good pool of candidates for what the parents contribution might have been.

But yeah, just a Backyard Mix (BYM) with barring.

He has whitish pink feet, so it’s quite possible he’s crossed with a cuckoo marans :)

Thanks for the information. I figured he wasn’t what we were told he was supposed to be. Doesn’t matter. We just wanted chooks. He is pretty and so far not mean as a snake. So he can stay.

His lighter barring isn’t because he’s a marans or Dominique cross, it’s because he has the blue gene (he’s blue barred), though I agree that he could be a marans mix
