Keep in mind that the books and the movie are both great, but there are some differences. The books are much more complete and the detail is amazing. Tolkien worked on the books for decades before they were actually published. Also, keep in mind that The Hobbit started out as a story for children, but the LOTR existed in his mind as a tale for adults. His writing style changed quite a bit over the years, too, so what starts out as a fun adventure in The Hobbit becomes high and beautiful by the end of LOTR. The Return of the King, in particular, has some astoundingly beautiful passages and ideas. They really open a window for us.
