Update- today is the day of the surgery. Willow was dropped off this morning and pre surgery prep began about an hour ago. Surgery may already be underway as I write this.

The vet said the biggest concern is not the anesthesia so much as dissecting the oviduct out, since the vena cava is nearby. And who knows what condition the oviduct is in, if it’s soft egg material or tumor(s) causing the impaction, and if there are adhesions. Bleeding out is a big risk.

However, if all goes well, she will be able to eat later today and come home tomorrow, where she will enjoy the life of a house chicken, at least until her stitches are removed in 2 weeks.

Good thoughts and prayers to my little Willow, will update later.

Yes the vet is looking to remove the oviduct. I did ask about the implant after, and he said most likely would not be needed. We have a recheck appointment later today so I will get the final details. Yes it’s a hard surgery for a chicken to endure and I know anesthesia is very risky. As I see it, my options are to continue medical management until euthanasia or surgery, which she may or may not survive. It’s a tough choice. My Christmas bonus will cover the cost of surgery. If she lives it will be worth every penny.
I think perhaps you’ve answered your own question. Managing the anesthesia during the operation is critical. The after care is just as important. I agree that the sooner the better her ability to endure the procedure is also very important. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your beloved girl.
Your journey will be so informative and helpful to us. There’s many hens who suffer from this condition. Please keep us posted.
Blessings to all who’s hands are upon this beloved lil girl.
