Hi, I’m checking back in to see anyone’s opinions about the sex of this chick. It’ll be 6 weeks old in a couple of days. I’m not sure if behavior affects anything at this stage but.. my sister brought over her puppy for me to dog sit and I let my chick out to see what they would do together, the puppy wanted to play while my chick fluffed up it’s feathers like it’s father does. It was really weird to see because of its young age actually like a whole rooster, even pecked him and like jump his legs at the poor puppy lol. The puppy got scared and hid behind me. :lau. The chicks comb is always that red no matter what it’s doing.

cockerel. Lucky he was plucky enough to keep your puppy away. It taught the pup a good lesson about chickens. It's never a good idea to introduce them to each other that way. It could easily have gone the other way. Lots of pups/dogs get over excited, play roughly and kill chickens.

It was fine, my sister has a whole farm with 50+ chickens, they always have chicks too, hes always is outside with them just sitting there and watching them lol never has killed one or tried, just a curious dog.

Chicks this age do not have male or female specific feathering. These aren't even saddle feathers.

ok, perhaps they are just new feathers coming in, which is why I mentioned to take a closer look in real life... so if you can't tell by feathering and no one is crowing or laying at this age, then what makes you say cockerel? Just the pinkness in the comb? am I missing something? Is it just a 50% chance guess?
