So happy for you. I know the feeling. I ate my first egg today and it was so good and yellow-rich. I also ate a store-bought egg at the same time and they were different. I'm going to enjoy the farm fresh eggs.
Here is the Lace Monitor lizard mooching around our campsite. He would have been after the meat we had or the eggs we brought with us kindly donated by our chickens. Seeing him so close up and bold made me very relieved we have a totally enclosed run for the chickens!
They're not great photos, sorry. He managed to steal a bag of bread rolls when we first arrived and not fast enough in our response. They are not especially dangerous to humans but if cornered they can give a nasty scratch with those claws or bites that turn bad. There is a lot of wild birds at this site too and they created a tremendous racket of alarm calls whenever they spotted it. No doubt they have bitter experience of them stealing eggs and chicks. It meant we always knew when he was approaching our supplies!
May your patience soon be rewarded with eggs, everyone

And they say all the dinosaurs have died out! They don't freak me out too much but our neighbours say one turns up sometimes in the spring in our back yards and I sure would not want to see him there.
ConGrats! on the egg KacklinKelly! Great to hear more peoples birds have started laying. I got 3 eggs today. Still only 1 maybe 2 of my SS hens are laying. This is the 5th month of their molting/winter vacation. I think it's time to get back to work now.
MB look how close we are to 2000 posts. we are getting so close!

Wow! What a cool lizard! Glad I don't have to worry about keeping those out of our coop. So now I'm kind of curious. What sorts of predators do you have to deal with on a regular basis in Australia?
