Congrats Debbie! That Welsummer egg is pretty!

That 6" of snow turned into 3" of solid ice last night. That made for a fun trip to the coop this morning, carrying a bucket of water. We only got one egg yesterday. I have an incubator full of eggs scheduled to hatch this week, so thankfully, I will have another distraction from my egg waiting. I'm definitely starting to feel like I'm watching a pot of water and waiting for it to boil. Maybe if I ignore the girls for a few days, they start laying.

I have 4 -18 week olds - 2 barreds, 1 RIR and a partridge plymouth. I think my RIR will be laying in the next week or so, she's doing the squat thing and it's so funny-- my smallest barred is doing the same- and bright red color abounds-- my 2 others seem a bit slower, so, maybe some eggs soon?? Although with this cold weather and darker days, I wasn't expecting anything until February or so. We'll see, they are funny. Not sure what to do about food though? Do I just offer oyster shell at this point instead of putting them on layer since not all appear to be at the same laying stage?

So happy to have you chime in! I remember that when I got the first true squat.. drop down, wings spread, wait for the back stroking, and stand up and shake it off, it was about 10 days to2 weeks after that my first egg came. I stopped feeding grower when the bag ran out right around 17 weeks, and switched to layer pellets. I didn't put out oyster shell until the first egg though. I had asked some old timers, and experienced chicken owners who said don't need it until the egg comes. The comb and waddle growing/redness is also big. Perhaps the last thing I noticed right before the egg parade was the moving around of the dummy eggs that I had sitting in each box, and the practising of going up and down the plank tothe coop, and sitting in the nests.. Eggs came days later. It's almost been 3 weeks since. We have yet to save a dozen, we keep eating them.. boy are they good. Other than the obvious good fresh taste, what I love the most is the whites. They are actually like meat, not the rubbery, tastless garbage I usually don't finish from before. I adore Egg white omlettes now!

One more thing... we LOVE pictures! Put some up of your pretty girls! Nice breeds, good egg layers!

ps- when your eggs do start, save your egg shells, let them dry out, and crush them up, feed em back in the oyster shell container...theyGOBBLE them right up!

I think my last hold out was my Columbian Wyandotte girl, ,but she was in and out of the nest boxes all day yesterday. My smallest most common chickens, my production reds, lay the largest eggs, and the biggest yokes inside. Cutie mama's.

I think my last hold out was my Columbian Wyandotte girl, ,but she was in and out of the nest boxes all day yesterday. My smallest most common chickens, my production reds, lay the largest eggs, and the biggest yokes inside. Cutie mama's.

I do! LOL Our BA was the 1st mystery layer. Then the Welsummer later thet day. The only problem is they're laying in their DIY nest under the roost I put some fake eggs in the nests... Now I put an object in the place they were laying and so she just made another one, right in front of the door where they come out. What the heck? LOL Oh well at least I have some girls laying

Debbie Congrats on the eggs. We have been having cold days here the last week too. I checked for eggs last night and didn't get any then today my son had an away basketball game to be at at 9am so I didn't check I just gave them some scratch and checked the water. Well after I got home and made food and went and checked the one egg in the nest was cracked just the shell not the membrane. I think its still good. If not I will just scramble it up shell and all for the girls they love scrambled eggs.

Yesterday got 7 eggs!!! Although I found one with my shoe under the bedding in the coop last night! Followed that up with 6 eggs today. All of my ISA Browns are laying, three of the RIR, and both of the americanas. I think it won't be to long until that 10 for 10 day!!! Heading to bed, I got to get up with the chickens!

Hey all. Have not been on in a minute, but I am back. I am from St. Thomas US Virgin Islands. My hens are doing great!!!! Guess what I heard so clucking for the past few days.... no eggs yet tho but I am excited. My girls are officially 5 months so fingers crossed that I will be getting my eggs soon.

I didnt get a roo but my brother in law has one that thinks he owns my girls, he is a smaller breed tho. Thats him in the hen house after I let the girls out the forage. I guess he is making sure its safe in there...lol

This waiting game is really messing with me. I had a dream last night that I went out and checked the nest box and there were tons different colored eggs. There were different shades of blues, greens and browns. I must really have eggs on the brain. Truth be told I still really don't like eating eggs. I have noticed that some of my SS's combs and waddles are getting bigger and redder again! hoping they start laying again soon. I couldn't believe the difference in size and color before and during molt. I guess it's because I have one Wellie molting and one not and I really see the comb size and color difference between them.
This isn't a very good picture but you can sort of see the difference. Phoebe's is much redder and bigger then Daphne's
