Oh how wonderful! CONGRATULATIONS USV1!!!!!! Isn't it so exciting? Just love love love it!
How old are your girls? Time flies until you get chickensGo girls yardbird! Hoping to atleast get 1 sometime.
Wow, that first hatch is impossible to repeat! You must have been on cloud 9. Brooster, I must be really getting old, I did'nt even realize you were hatching a batch. What kind of incubator do you have? So exciting it must be. I would love to do that. What breeds are they, are they your eggs? So sorry about the heavy rooster count. How many chickens do you have?I don't send any roosters to the freezer until somewhere between 16-20 weeks, depending on how fast they grow. I never cull a bird until I see pointy saddle and hackle feathers, or the rooster has crowed. I hear you though. I had Heritage RIRs and they matured so slowly. The pullets had really thick legs. It was tricky with them for a long time. These breeds I just hatched are really nice, so I may sell extra roosters instead of eating them. We'll see.
The very first time I hatched eggs, I got 100% pullets. It was very confusing for months, because it was my first set of chicks, and I kept looking and looking for signs of roosters. I couldn't compare between chicks because they were all female! And every one kept telling me...you've gotta at least have one fella in there. After that, I kind of had it in my head that most of the chicks I hatched would be female, but it turned out to be the opposite. Roosters, roosters, and more roosters. I made a careful chart yesterday of my chicks. So far I have 3 definite roosters, 3 probably pullets, and 4 complete ? So statistically speaking, this hatch is right on. I sold several chicks already. With my luck it was probably mostly pullets. One good thing though, each of the 3 definite roosters is a different breed, which is what I want, one rooster in each breed.
I have gifted 2 dozen eggs to my neighbor where my chickens wander over to. I have to go over there this weekend and school Duke while there. They have 2 small children, and I would hate to see him do anything stupid. Take my rooster stick, and make him move, move move.I called animal control and the zoning board. They both said I need 3 acres. Animal control is only involved if we receive an animal cruelty complaint. (NEVER GONNA HAPPEN) Zoning said that I can apply for a permit and it will be automatically denied, but that I can then appeal. They send all my neighbors letters and if no neighbors complain... They should approve it at a hearing. They said the health department is only involved in a cruelty case. What a pain. I am so sad. Before we got the chickens we consulted the neighbors who all said no problem. But since we JUST started getting eggs, we have yet to share eggs to them. So I need my girls to start laying asap.
