Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

No egg today-maybe because of the weather. My heat hearty chickies are contending with pouring rain, hail, and even snow here in Phoenix. So weird. So coming south isn't the best bet for you guys in the bad weather, At least not yet. Stay warm and dry everyone.

Amazingly, it fits in the skelter...lol!

Your eggs look beautiful and uniform, well except for that jumbo! Do you wash your eggs? No matter how hard I try to keep my nest boxes clean with fresh hay, my eggs always seem to have some sort smudge, dirt, or down right poo mark. I was under the impression if you wash eggs, then they had to be stored in the refridgerator. What do you all do? I have 6 nest boxes, and they always seem to go to only 2 of them.. I wish they would spread the love a little bit!

19 degrees out today....

I have such a time keeping my nesting boxes clean! I have to change the shavings all the time. The problem now is my one hen who isn't laying, but insists on sleeping in there, and also the fact that Kenny Rogers always hangs out in the boxes watching the hens lay their eggs. Kenny Rogers poops everywhere

I brush my eggs off and leave them at room temp. They'll stay fresh for weeks and weeks, partly because our kitchen is unheated and usually about 40 degrees.

I have 5 nesting boxes, and they use 2 of them, but they alternate days. They insist on all laying in the same box each day, sometimes at the same time. Yesterday the coop camera caught images of Loretta laying an egg while sitting on top of Irlene. You can actually see the egg fall out of her butt onto to Irlene's head! I started to post the pictures, but it's actually pretty gross. Funny, but gross.

I do clean the coop every day (scooping the poop out of the PDZ, which only takes a few minutes), but my chickens hardly ever poop in the nest boxes. Granted, we only have 4 hens and 2 nest boxes, but even lately they seem to not even kick the shavings out too much. The only thing I do to my eggs is brush the pine shavings off. No need to wash them, they're already clean!

Brooster,

There is my laugh for the day!

When you say brush your eggs off, what exactly do you mean? A member over in an incubating thread said she takes a very fine emory board and sands off the stains. I have to do more reading on that. You incubate eggs right? Do they have to be super clean when you put them in the incubator, or can you just put them in? I would imagine you do have to clean them. I would adore to try to hatch a bunch of these mutt chicks. I see several people every week with chicks in a box at the farmers market in town. Would love to experiment on my eggs and then see if I could buy some exotic eggs. That would be neat. Wonder also if any of my girls will go broody, maybe the Australorp or the Wyandotte. Who knows....

Funny thing is, I don't find poop in the nest boxes, but do find these marks on the eggs. I am thinking that it is brought in on the hens feet if they've stepped in something on the way in the coop, or that when they actually lay the egg, some comes along with it? Yuc....My friends all ready think that there is something yucky about the eggs,, hard to believe. I tell them if they ever took the time to watch where their grocery store eggs come from, and the filthy conditions they are laid into from battery farming, they would never eat another store bought egg again! (not to mention the taste of them!)

Hey all, MB, I share your winter blahs-I always have said I suffer from SAD--the sun hasn't been out in several days but thank god the wind has stopped blowing at the 40MPH range--today is cold and snowy, tomorrow warmer with freezing rain /snow...just sick of it all. Cheer up, not sure where you are located but hoping the weather settles down a bit. That rooster of yours sounds a bit trying. Good luck, maybe he'll settle down some.

joining the egg discussion, my eggs are always clean as well. My one barred rock has weird hard clusters on her eggs, sort of like little hard bumps, not always, but sometimes, anyone know what that may be from? I have 4 hens and 3 nest boxes and oddly, they use them all. 2 share one, and the others lay in different ones. I hardly find poop in the boxes and I just line them with lots of pine shavings. They were kicking them out but now seem to be leaving them alone so I don't do much except add more shavings if the get to barren. I keep my eggs in the fridge always- I'm not sure what to do in that respect-counter or fridge? What is the difference? The one jumbo egg from my RIR was a double yolker, she has laid several more of that size but yesterday her eggs were a little more normal.

and, would totally go to the virgin islands for some chicken talk!! LOL how fun would that be.?

Really, if eggs don't have their natural bloom washed off, they are fine to stay out on the counter for quite some time. Old habits die hard for some people, and they just don't trust that information, and refrigerate. Eggs will last even longer in the fridge, but from my understanding, for baking, and beating, eggs whip up better if room temperature. I haven't had too much of a surplus since the eggs have begun to need to put them in the fridge, they get eaten way to fast around here.

Sorry for the no egg day yesterday jyurina... that is a total bummer. When this small flock of mine slows down and goes into molt come fall, I'm going to be so depressed! Hope the weather is going to be better for them, and you today!

kdwag,
Are you in that horrible storms path that is supposed to hit the midwest? I pray that doesn't make it here to NY, I am 90 miles north of NYC.
