Hi! Actually I found the exBattery hens on Craigslist. They seem to be adjusting well. They have learned how to scratch from the chicks, and they will eat bugs/worms from your hand. They seem very happy to snuggle together in the hay at night. They do not know how to roost at all, but they are happy anyway! I am going in a little while to pick up some week ish old Easter Eggers! My daughter wants blue eggs!... Eventually lol!

And today she gave us a tiny brown egg. Tabatha's is the one on the left. I was hoping it would be darker... and it is darker then the one on the right from our gold star. Tabatha is 21 weeks old.

Congrats! Yours looks like it's about the same color as my marans lays. They'll get bigger, that's for sure. My marans lays extra large to jumbo eggs every time.

I have 6 POL pullets. I have 3 Ancona's, they are 17 weeks old. I have two Marans, they are 22 weeks old and My Wyandotte pullet must be getting onto 30 weeks

When will she lay. She is huge and has only just started showing signs of comb and wattles.

Omg omg omg I am soooooo egg-cited! Had a lot of nice plants left over from moving a garden, put an ad on craigslist for a trade- blue layer for the plants...got a call and a nice gentleman traded me a blue layer (going on trust here lol I know, I know- It's craigslist) but I love her already! Told me she was a 10 month old Americana* - found out she's an EE bit still pretty. Fingers crossed for blue eggs soon!

Congrats on the new colored egg layer! So happy for you, and I know exactly how excited you must be, I was tickled blue when I brought home my new Ameruacana pullet, and she has turned out to be a wonderful layer.. I am dying to hatch some of her eggs. Before you know it, you'll have a colored egg. I can't wait to see what color she lays for you. Please send us some pictures when she does. I saved up 6 of Vivians eggs, she laid these over the past 10 days..

I finally got it! Hard boiled eggs peeled perfectly! These were layed only 3 days ago and no chunking!


I set the timer for 10 minutes, as soon as they started boiling and let them boil till timer went off, I then filled pan with cold water and packed with ice. I think I only waited a couple minutes (was needing them quick) and all 4 were perfect!

Pretty girl!!! I cant decide if my brand new layer (today was her 1st!!!) is green or blue. Or greenish blue..lol. I do want a cream legbar or Pure Ameraucana!!!!

She's a pretty girl. I'd love to see those battery hen pics as well. Now that I know more, everytime someone tells me they had to buy eggs, I cringe. I will HATE to have to buy store eggs once mine take the winter off.

Thanks for the advice on the hard boiled eggs. I have been struggling with those little buggers.

I had another chicken injury this weekend, nothing severe. Liza got her toenail caught on something, I think, not sure. I happened to be in the run when I saw it at the same time everyone else saw the blood too. They go NUTS over blood don't they? So, I scooped her out and into the barn we went. She was so good for me and I spent a lot of time cleaning it. After a small amount of time in the barn, it slowed down quite a bit, so I let them out to free range a short while and it quit. Today it looks really good. I also see her feathers are finally starting to grow in over her last injury. The last update I had on Clara was that she is doing well and has taken up with my step sister's youngest son who feeds them. So, all is well and hope it continues. My dog, on the other hand, still having tummy trouble. We were up all last night and this morning. I let him get in bed, mistake, but he was so much more comfortable. So my husband spent the night in the guest room. He's doing better now but going to see a vet on Wed. who specializes in geriatric and internal medicine. Hope they can help us out--

Hey everyone, I have missed a few days, so exciting to see news of first eggs - and how beautiful they are!

My 4 girls have taken the shortening days of autumn seriously and I only get an egg most days for the RIR now. Roll on June 22nd and the shortest day (in Australia anyway)! And thank goodness I froze my excess eggs when they first started. They are all 11 months old now and:

Beetle the Australorp had 2 days being broody in the sin bin. That stopped her, but she laid one egg then hasn't since.

Barnie the Barnevelder just stopped a month ago. Losing a few feathers but may not be a full moult. Happy and healthy but laying is clearly not on her agenda.She still sings her loud, lovely egg song most days, but I think she is just a tease.

Sylvia the Silver Campine is moulting, She currently has no tail whatsoever and looks ridiculous. At least she isn't bald but I guess it could get worse!

And my sweetest girl, Ladybird the RIR lays most days but has Bumblefoot - a small black lesion on both feet. I only checked because she stopped going onto the roost at night, instead settling into the sugar cane mulch (like straw) on the floor of the coop. I am treating her with Betadine and only hope it doesn't get worse. I mention an avian vet to my husband. He frowns..... I give determined look (a lot like the stink eye). No prizes for who will win - if it comes to that.

Meantime, she isn't limping and is eating and drinking well, so I try not to worry too much. They are such dear members of the family now.
