Any Rabbit People? Warning Pic Heavy!

Are you sure he is a he? Girl bunnies get pretty aggressive about their areas, its the mommy in them!

As far as rabbit rescues, I thank you. Not a lot of people know rabbits also need rescuing! Everyone thinks dogs and cats of course, but rabbits are the 3rd most animal put to sleep each year in the US. I started with rabbit rescue a bit, but honestly our area isn't the nicest for new rescues. Meaning, if I was taken other rescues attention away from them, our group would be blamed for millions of things. So I began breeding full time. I do every now and then get calls from local shelters about special needs bunnies that we take on, but nothing full time rescuing. As long as breeders breed the right way, as in I will take any rabbit I sell back for any reason and I don't sell for Easter, then breeders wouldn't get the bad rescue rep they do.

Thanks again for rescuing, and please keep us updated on your rescued rabbits!

He is DEF. a he.

We wanted to get him fixed, but can't find a vet that will do it around here.

Oh may I say that is one pretty BEW girl! I love BEWs, but never had any luck with them showing. I want VM Lionheads someday, something about a colored rabbit with some white plus bright blue eyes kills me!

Edit: The Rex are Mini's and I had to ship them all the way from Colorado Springs, CO. They are Sable Points. They aren't very well known in my area, but I love the color!

I had a Simese sable point mini rex years ago (I think it was a mix) and I loved it! I really want to breed my BEW because she has such a good build for a BEW holland lop and she has such a sweet and curios personality!

They are all so beautiful! I'd never seen a Lionhead before!

Mine are just plain old bunnies. Sybill and Smokey Rabbitson were dwarf mixes from a feed store in 2002. They blessed us with 2 bucks, Snowshoe Bunny, a BEW, and Outrigger Joe, who looked like a black & white dutch and was born with a splay leg. After seeing Joe, we spent the summer spaying and neutering rabbits. Snoeshoes had a problem with intestinal gas buildup from birth (another birth defect?) and only lived to be 3. My beautiful Sybill died in 2009 and Smokey quit eating and drinking. Joseph just got angry. He didn't understand what happened. (It was a brain tumor.) Smokey hit it off with a shelter doe called Bette Davis and she came to live with us and really saved Smokey's life. Smokey's still going. He's a really old man now and he needs special care. Little Joe died last October and about broke my heart. DH gave me 2 little dutch bunnies for Christmas, a black & white doe that we call Little Jo, and her brother, Willoughby. We're not breeding them. They're house pets. They have their own garden outside where they can play with supervision.

Smokey and Sybill really belonged to my old dog, Brownie. He loved all babies, regardless of species, and was the only dog I have ever trusted with anything implicitly. When they were babies, they'd run and jump all over him. He worried about them constantly and even after he lost his sight and could barely get around, he'd go curl up next to his rabbits. Brownie died in June of 2009 at 17. He even took Shoeshoes and Joe out of the nest from Sybill because he could hear them fussing and she wasn't going into the nest box to see about it. He would take them out and lay in front of their house with the babies between his paws. Sybill wasn't at all concerned. I think she'd have jumped out to feed them when it was time. I put them right back, though. When they were big enough to get out of the nest and around, he'd nose open the door and they'd curl up with him on their own. I do love my bunny rabbits!

.

What cute bunnies you have! I love baby dutch, something about them looking like oreos is just toooooo cute!

I'm glad I found this thread since we became the owners of two baby buns last weekend. I have no I idea what sexes they are but I plan on having them fixed. There is a vet that specializes in small animals and exotics in Raleigh that I'll be taking these two to for check-ups and surgery.

For all of you experienced rabbit owners (or do they own you?

) have you found it best to get pet bunnies fixed, regardless of sex? Does it alter their personalities in any way? I have lots of plans for these little ones... I've already turned our 3X10 foot chicken tractor into their exercise pen where, weather permitting, we let them run, jump, and play for a couple of hours each day. Boy do they ever love being out in that thing! When they can't exercise outside I baby gate our kitchen off and let them play in there.

Here are some pics of our two sweeties... I have no idea what breeds they are, we got them from a chicken auction. Their names are Pepper and Nutmeg.

Pepper, the more feisty of the two.

Nutmeg, who seems very easy going. S/he is the softest rabbit I've ever felt, with fur that feels like a chinchilla!

ETA.... Does anyone have an idea about their breeds since I wasn't able to talk to the person who auctioned them off? Mixed breeds?

Oh, I want to hug them! Congratulaions! How old are they? And such good names!

Good thing rabbits are easier to sex than chickens and geese! There's a lot of good info on the American House Rabbit Assoc's website, too.

I didn't have Smokey neutered quick enough, hence the advent of Snowshoes and Outrigger Joe. I was a bit afraid to do it. I didn't want anything to happen to them. We did him when those little guys were born and he was living in the Bachelor's Apartment. I had Snowshoes done as soon as his testicles dropped. He stayed just as sweet as ever. He also never sprayed. Joe only had one drop. Because of his deformity, the other never did and I waited until I found a really good rabbit vet to do him because it was major surgery, like spaying Sybill. I had her done as soon as the boys were weaned. I intend to do the same with Willoughby and Little Jo, but my vet says he doesn't like to spay and neuter too young. They don't do anesthesia well. I can separate them until the vet is okay with it.

Maybe one of these folks can get you a picture of what sexing bunnies looks like. It's very easy.

Thanks, Kathy! I have no idea how old they are, there was no information whatsoever about them, other than "rabbits".

Personally, I think sexing chickens is easier than sexing these babies! I'm sure they're probably tired of me exposing their private parts, but my curiosity is killing me. I found this website which has great pics and I can really see the difference between the two sexes in those. Still, it's difficult because our two babies are still pretty small... not much pops out for me to look at.

However, after comparing them to those website pics I think I'm about 99% sure that Pepper is a girl and Nutmeg is a boy.

At what age are rabbits spayed and neutered?
