I know that there are a few pro dog handlers on here so please if you have any tips and tricks that you use in the confirmation ring. Can you tell me what are the best tricks are?

To keep the dog from sitting, spend more time rewarding the dog for standing than you do for sitting.

If your dog is sitting each time it comes up to you to get a reward, you need to stop rewarding it when it is sitting and start rewarding it when it is standing.

Teach a verbal and a physical cue for standing. If a dog sits in front of me when I want it to stand, I will lean in towards it, say "get back" and if it does not stand then I might touch (GENTLY!!) a rear foot with the tip of my toe. As soon as the pop up into a stand, they get smiles and treats galore. Sitting makes the smiles and the treats go away when I am show training, and then we start again.

Gaiting is much the same. Dogs must learn to stay on the left, keep a steady pace, and if possible, not pull on the lead. It's all practice.

If you intend to show a dog, a handling class would be some money really well spent!

You might enjoy these clips of me working with a couple of young dogs. These guys are littermates, and in these clips they are 15 mos.

First is Mike, who is now in a new home. You can clearly see that this dog is being trained for the show ring and for obedience at the same time. He has a clear understanding of the difference between stacking for the breed ring, and obedience.

This is his brother Milton, whom I still have.

You have beautiful dogs! (Redyre)
I am very envious of your training abilities and "stick-to-it-ness".
I show a Mastiff in confirmation.

Bwebb, I am an overnight success after 20 years.

Thank you for the comments on my dogs. My dogs are so important to me, and bring me so much joy.

The Breed ring can be a cruel place sometimes. You nearly always have more disappointments than triumphs when breeding and showing dogs, but somehow those triumphs are worth it when they come along.

Good luck to you out there.
