Any scents that might deter coons, skunks, possums?

I have lived out here in the country for four years. I have seen all of those creatures running around here int eh contry, but never on my property. WE let our two dogs run free around the property, peeing and pooping where they please. It is my belief that b/c of this, is why we have never had a predator problem on our land. I freerange my chickens and ducks, and don't even lock them up at night. so, I would highly reccomend, if you don';t want to get a dog, then borrow some dog poo form a neighbour and deposit around your land.
edit, lol, I see you have dogs, do you not let them run around your property?

....... it may not work, it may work, my mother swears by it...... an old Native American "wives-tale". Any time you have your hair cut, save the clippings. Sprinkle around the coop/run about 5 feet out and in. Of course, rain, wind, snow, etc will make it fly away, but my mother had 3 chickens, free range only, slept in a dog cage, and NEVER had an incident, this is what she was told by her Indian Grandmother. Do I personally swear by it? NO. Do I do it? OH YES!

LoL. Of course, you have to keep putting new down every 2 weeks or so........

Otherwise, I built my coop as a Fort Knox, and even that I worry about. Wild critters will get by anything for that fresh meal

Not sure if it would work for protecting chickens, but my Grandmother used to have us Grandkids walk around the out side edge of her garden barefoot to help keep the raccoons from getting into her sweet corn.

Have you had issues with predators? or is this precautionary. Stray cats will come on our property too, as will stray dogs, but never had a fox, coyote, oppossum, or raccoon. Found a dead raccoon at the mouth of our driveway before though, and the only chicken I lost was to the neighbours dog.

so far, since all 8 of our little Silkies and Frizzles got eaten last night, we've had our dogs out by their empty pen doing their thing a few times today. I asked my DH to go out there too, but just got a look. Hmmm wonder what that look meant.

We've got 2 Havahart traps we'll set and put 2 lights on that aim out that way, and we'll sleep with the window open and our son's gun not far from us. He's away at college unfortunately or he'd get them for me. He's an incredible shot and usually gets his deer with 1 shot. He'll be home next weekend, so if all my sons (4) go out there to pee and he can get lucky enough to see a Raccoon or fox venture into the yard, we'll maybe solve this problem. My farmer neighbor trapped 16 foxes this year and 1 45 lb raccoon so far. Agh! That's a giant roccoon isn't it?
