My gateway desktop crashed I guess you would say yesterday.
It froze and when I rebooted it a screen keeps coming up to reboot using a disk or from something else..
I cannot get on the home screen to repair it back to another date.

I looked on my DH's laptop, which is what I am on and it seems to be a problem with Gateway, and it gave several fixes but I am not real smart in the tech department.

Any help please??? I cant take it to the real Geek Squad until my DH gets home next week and I will be crazy on this laptop by then.

OK

two things!!!

did you make restore disks when you bought your laptop???????

Does you gateway have a shiny sticker on the bottom of it?? and what Operating system was it running??

Do you have any programs that need to use for work??? that run on windows..

No restore disks, I do have the sticks that have some of my pics, but none from the last 2 years. I know I am kicking myself, my Furbabies that have crossed the bridge are on that computer and I kept forgetting to get more sticks.

Windows Vista AMD Phenon x4 64

LX series

and it does have a back up button beside the power button that I have never noticed until now.

I did the alt/f8 and nothing happened

the alt/f10 and I will get a screen but not a repair screen that it talks about on the web.

when it reboots it says:
reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot medianin selected boot device and press a key. ( this PC came with no disks)

PXE-MOF: exiting PXE ROM
PXE-E53 no boot filename rcvd

????

how old?? the f10 is only on newer models.

there is a way you can save the pictures (albeit a bit complected)

you can download the windows vista *version* and use your license key.

try calling gateway to see if you can get a recover disk for your computer model. Most computer manufactures carry them. That would be a simple way I know hp usually sold theres for 5 dollers.

The computer is only 2 yrs old. It came without disks and books, you had to download everything you wanted. I was used to a HP that came with a massive amount of books and disks. I will try Gateway and see if they can send me something.

Turn your computer off and once you turn it on immediately start pushing F10 (I believe its f10) rapidly/continuously till a screen comes up that gives you different options, the one you want is to open in safe mode and do what you need to do that way, to fix the computer.

Like how new mine is not all that new and it works on mine and mine is a gateway? I got mine in dec. 2006.

Check to see how to get into BIOS setup (F1/F2? on gateway?). See if the Primary Drive is listed at all (if not then probably dead HD). If the drive is still listed, then you can use the other machine to burn a bootable CD and startup off of that (change 1st. boot device to CD in BIOS). You could then check HD and, if nothing else, mount the screwy drive in another machine as a SLAVE and pull off all essential data before trashing it.
