I am vaguely offended by this.
I spoke to my husband about eating silkie meat, and he gags every time he thinks about it....handy when he gets on my nerves.

I have lived in Thailand for over 10 years and have never witnessed anyone eating a cat or dog. I have heard there are areas where some will eat dog meat, but in general, it's not something which happens here. I think the press has long since fooled people. Sure, many of the Thais eat strange little bugs, frogs, locusts, and etc. ,but even then, it's usually only those who come from the rural areas. Lastly, Thai food is heavenly
Eating silkies? Apparently the Chinese do, and from time to time, you do see them sold at the open air markets as there many Thai/Chinese people here. I probably would try it if I had silkies, but I wouldn't go and buy any just for the sake of eating.
Two points here....
#1) I agree that the media is the prime suspect in promoting many misleading stereotypes.
#2) For the most part the peoples that are atributted to eating strange(to Americans anyway) things like dogs do so due to lack of other options. Rarely are we Americans or other civilized peoples lacking for food that requires such extreme measures. There are people in many countries that either eat what they can get(yes, even dogs or rats) or starve. Being from a rural part of Kentucky I do know from experience what that is like. I've eaten opussum, racoon, woodchuck and several things I really would prefer to forget when I was growing up,but at least I didn't starve. I do very well remember where I came from though and refuse to pass judgement on what other people have to do to survive.
