Anybody eats Silkies?

I've heard people say you can't eat roosters, or you can't eat old chickens, or that Rhode Island Reds aren't good for meat, etc., etc. They are all wrong! If it's a chicken, and it's healthy, you can eat it. Go for it, and enjoy with gratitude and pride! I'm sure they'll be delicious!

I "googled" the subject, discovered good things about Silkies for food. for instance, silkie is the main ingredient in the broth for mongolian hotpot (in american restraunts). and the dark meat goes great with sweet, hot dishes like ginger, red pepper, cayenne, garlic etc.

Plus, the feathers will be worth saving for crafts.

Lots to be thankful for.

On the other hand, I have never heard of Silkie roosters being social problem birds. I'm sure its possible, but everytime I've seen them at shows, they're just hanging out together in cages, just gettin' along, being sweet.....

Asian communities will also eat all dogs and cats they can get their hands on, besides bats ants and roaches to name few species they consume.

But I am not Asian, that's why I wonder if Silkie meat will be palatable to me.

Not cause they have lots of meat or I want to eat Silkies, but what to do with ALL EXTRA ROOSTERS....

That's the problem.

I agree, these comments are vaguely offensive, Pascopol. After all, Europeans eat moldy, "rotten" dairy cream (blue cheese). Perhaps if you broadened ever so slightly your cultural notions of what is "palatable," you might be pleasantly surprised at some of the culinary experiences that open up to you. I hear fruit bat is extremely delicious (not kidding)....

I am vaguely offended by this.

I spoke to my husband about eating silkie meat, and he gags every time he thinks about it....handy when he gets on my nerves.

I have lived in Thailand for over 10 years and have never witnessed anyone eating a cat or dog. I have heard there are areas where some will eat dog meat, but in general, it's not something which happens here. I think the press has long since fooled people. Sure, many of the Thais eat strange little bugs, frogs, locusts, and etc. ,but even then, it's usually only those who come from the rural areas. Lastly, Thai food is heavenly

Eating silkies? Apparently the Chinese do, and from time to time, you do see them sold at the open air markets as there many Thai/Chinese people here. I probably would try it if I had silkies, but I wouldn't go and buy any just for the sake of eating.

Two points here....

#1) I agree that the media is the prime suspect in promoting many misleading stereotypes.

#2) For the most part the peoples that are atributted to eating strange(to Americans anyway) things like dogs do so due to lack of other options. Rarely are we Americans or other civilized peoples lacking for food that requires such extreme measures. There are people in many countries that either eat what they can get(yes, even dogs or rats) or starve. Being from a rural part of Kentucky I do know from experience what that is like. I've eaten opussum, racoon, woodchuck and several things I really would prefer to forget when I was growing up,but at least I didn't starve. I do very well remember where I came from though and refuse to pass judgement on what other people have to do to survive.

'nuff said???

Sure, some people might eat some of those things but to them it is like eating fish or pork. And not all people in a certain culture eats all those things. My son won't even eat chicken!

And also I heard that even humans are part of the food chain in some jungle areas.

All I know is that Vancouver (BC Canada) has one of the biggest Chinatowns in North America and a fellow I know raised Silkies just for that market and he made good money doing it.
I think Silkie meat is just the same as any other chicken meat except for the dark/black skin.

My Brother will not eat turkey ....ever. When he was as a teenager he worked at a poultry processing plant.
