My neighbor got us into chickens and they started out with a great little hutch from Del's Farm Supply, a NW chain. I looked around for plans, ideas, etc. (many of them here) but in the end decided the price was right vs. my time & effort to purchase a kit just like they had. We found one at a location without any extras other than the display model, already assembled, so they begrudgingly sold us that one for the same price (just under $100)
It has been and continues to be a great hutch. I have raised it by adding extensions to the legs, added chicken wire around the sides and back, and mating it up next to a portable dog kennel style cage (8, 24" wide 42" high panels hinged). With bird netting over the top and an improvised tarp cover for shade, it seems to be working well.
HOWEVER, winter is around the corner and already I am beginning to think about insulation, adding walls over the wire mesh already there, a sliding door vs. hinged cage door, etc.
Has anyone else out there got one of these, and have you made modifications/improvements?
Thanks,
Galen
