Anybody lose their unemployment yesterday?

Been reading this thread (not all of it, but a lot) and my heart goes out to those of you struggling right now. Don't think my political opinion is really needed here. (for the record I'm "bitter and holding on to my gun and my Bible"

) but I did have a thought for those of you looking for work. My school system can't find enough substitute teachers and is always looking for more. Don't know about your area but might be worth looking into. My system pays 90 dollars a day, not great but better than nothing. Its not easy work, but it is steady..at least in my area. And honestly, if you can keep a group of kids in some assemblence of order, you will probably be asked back. The woman who last subbed for me ripped her turban off her head and was about to use it to strangle one of the kids when the principal came in.. she won't be asked back.. but if you can keep it together you probably will.

You have to be pretty low income to qualify for grants. School loans are a rip off usually. 7.5% interest. They tried to pass a bill that would allow the govt to loan the money directly to students. I think it got a resounding NO from the party of NO. It eliminated the middle man enabling people to get loans at a lower interest rate. Good for the people, not good for the middleman. They like that 6.5% interest that they get for no risk at all. They get the money from Uncle Sam at 1% then loan it at 7.5% and it is fully guaranteed by Uncle Sam. Don't want to take that free money at our expense from the money changers.

So it's not welfare. Believe it or not your income taxes go to pay for a lot of social safety nets. They are there for you to use if you absolutely need them. Not just people that don't deserve the benefits.

People that take an opportunity to go in to a new field at this point are just showing good sense. Unfortunately there are a lot of unscrupulous trade schools out there just waiting to take your money. You really have to watch it and check to see what their actual placement rates are. Not that you need them to place you in a job. It helps to see how much employers value the degrees they offer and if the field is even hiring.

I heard a report on NPR a few weeks ago about the fact that some schools get financing backed by the government for your entire degree, instead of just 1 semester at a time. Then if you have to stop for some reason, they collect the entire amount from you. School loans can't be blown off. They will garnish your wages and they can't be cleared by doing a chapter 13.

Here's the kicker - once upon a time the government was the only option for student loans. It was simply that banks did not see these as profitable. (This should sound familiar if you recall the subprime thing) then during the bush one years it was determined that the government should get out of the business of student loans. So it was privatized. And Lo and behold it turned out to be profitable! The majority of students did pay off their loans. Suddenly there were tons of loans available and loans could be had for ANY type of school - college - or Barb's Beauty School. Suddenly, there were tons of students and schools found they could raise rates. Schools needed to spend more to accommodate the new students and the new infrastructure so they raised tuition and so on and so forth...... Now they are trying to rein in the for profits because it has all (shock!) spiraled out of control. In all of these cases, if the government had kept it on their own it would have stayed OK. If they had freed it fully to the free market it would have been ok. It was when they try to create free market profits and socialized loss.

In my area, the schools are having a real hard time financially, so they're cutting people all the time. I don't think they have any openings where I live. Pretty much anything that is funded by the state or local governments in California is cutting back personnel big time.

might be worth it to check. Subs aren't "on the payroll".. they are hired as needed and if a teacher is out, one is needed. As long as there are teachers, there will be subs.

I'm following this thread looking for options for a few of my friends, as well as a potential fall back plan for me, but the back-handed slams at one particular party is getting tiresome. There is enough blame to go around in Washington for all of the parties.

With regards to teaching part-time, be advised that regs vary from state-to-state and may not be portable. The wife of an ex-employee of mine had her OH license, but needed additional training to teach in CO.

Oh, yeah, I forgot that I would have to get my teaching credentials.

In this state, you can't even homeschool without a credential.

You have been going through this a long time. What kind of work do you do? If I could make $500-600 we'd be doing good. Is that monthly or weekly? Either way we would be okay. I'm looking for something part time now.

I took it upon myself to go into business for myself... to help out in 2008. We've grown... a LOT! I work with local farms now, and sell online as well. But that money is 'per month'. I have to work a lot of hours to get that and it costs me a bit upfront... but I've built the clients over time.

Problem is, I am applying for full time and part-time jobs as well as for my husband. Its a race to see who gets what first. He's been unemployed since Feb 1 2010... I thought we had until January... so I don't know if he qualifies for a tier 2 unemployment extention or not? I filled last week, got a notice we has 'less then 2 weeks' left. Then I checked the deposit this week from ESC and it was only $140, not the usual $298. And when I checked the site, it left me a 1-800 # and no other info.

I mean, I'd hate to do it... but we either use our tax money to start paying some bills... or its time to start cashing out the IRA.

Luckily... we're only 30.

I have WHAT in my yard? :

Guess what! Just going into effect now... if you have a'private student loan' you know... the kind not protected by the government... if you go into bankrupcy those student debt loans go away now! (Not the stafford loans!)

Suze Orman is my financial savior!!!

certification for a substitute? You don't need any certification for subbing here, I was a substitute teacher my last year of college before I was even eligible to apply for certification. Several of our "stay at home" moms sub for us when they need a few extra bucks. They do a back ground check. If you arent dangerous, and you arent crazy... youre in. Im sure each district is different so check into the qualifications required in your area of course, im just speaking from my own experience.

You need teaching credentials here too... just not for home schooling.

I'm going to talk to my neighbor about apprentacing for face painting for her business. She home schools and she's a professional clown that does all kinds of events. I've talked to her before... If I learn she can get me a few gigs and take 30%, which would be awesome business

My husband already takes care setting up their parties some weekends. But they are slow this time of year.

So with all that said... we work hard, and take almost anything that comes along
smile.png
And we are grateful....

Something will happen for us... I don't know when and how... but it will!
