It is a Union Job but the training is free and you can work doing whatever you want after. They don't even asses a monetary figure to the training it is truly on the job and then classes at the hall itself or at the sugar shack in New Hampshire where my husband and Brother in law set some poles. DH is the president of the local so he can put in a good word for him.The only thing you pay for is your books about $200 and that can be waived if you have a hardship. This is a good Union, we take care of our people. We have a brotherhood fund (DH's idea) 5cents an hr comes out of everyones pay and if anyone has a hardship (death of family member)house burns down car accident. We chip in pay bills give food gift cards. There is a $20 fee to file the application with NEAT because it weeds out the people who aren't serious.
Work does run out we just finished with a lay off ,lay off's usually run from a couple days to a couple of months , but they just won the bid on a job in maine that is going to take 10yrs to finish.Huge wind farm, its passed all the legislature and is starting soon He will have to travel maybe to maine, nh,vermont or farther. That's the tough part but they put him up in a hotel
He also learns how to drive a truck and one of guys at the hall usually DH will bring him to the registry with one of their trucks and sponsor him for his CDL.
My brother started to go through the apprenticeship and found out he didn't like heights so he got his equipment opperators license and worked for the Union that way , he applied for the T last year and they called him up and he is soon to be a journeyman T lineman in boston , he loves it.
PM me if you want

Awesome!

If anyone sews , I'm being bombarded with requests for American Girl doll bedding and clothes. The store down the road from me is having me sew the bedding for them. The ladies brother is making the beds.
It seems nobody can afford the official american doll stuff. I got a pattern on sale for $1.99 and I have a stash of fabric. So I'll be busy sewing tomorrow. I know a lot of the ladies here can sew. Also lots of free patterns for knitting and crocheting dolls accessories and outfits.

I believe the last time I checked you had to have credentials for any teaching job except for certain types of walk-on positions for extra-curricular activities. I can check again to make sure. I think it used to be easier to become a substitute in the past, all you needed was a BA and take the CBEST, but they changed it. They're pretty strict here in California. Now, teaching in a community college, I think, is not as strict as long as you have a BA degree and/or substantial work experience. But, again, no openings.

I just checked and you can be a substitute for 30 days in California per school year without a credential, but you have to take the CBEST and pay "application fees". I will see what they have open. I am not really that great with kids, so I'm still not sure, but I would love to teach art and government.

You need teaching credentials here too... just not for home schooling.

I'm going to talk to my neighbor about apprentacing for face painting for her business. She home schools and she's a professional clown that does all kinds of events. I've talked to her before... If I learn she can get me a few gigs and take 30%, which would be awesome business

My husband already takes care setting up their parties some weekends. But they are slow this time of year.

So with all that said... we work hard, and take almost anything that comes along

And we are grateful....

Something will happen for us... I don't know when and how... but it will!

My daughter is a proffesional facepainter she loves it. This is a good time to learn cause its slow ,just birthday parties but if you get good at it you can charge quite a bit. She works for another facepainter when she's swamped. you can charge upwards of $125 an hr.

The way I see it is the govts over regulation and over bearing yet incompetant oversight caused this melt down. so the banks, wall street, insurance co's, and mortagage co's have been bailed out at the cost of all tax payers. and the middle class has suffered the brunt of all of this govt BS.This is truely a jobless recovery because of failed policies and empty promises. It is not the fault of middle class folks who were working hard and trying to better their position, those jobs are gone and most will not come back anytime soon if at all. We the people may be guilty of not paying attention to what the gov has been doing till now and it may be to late to turn things around, so our kids can enjoy the same freedom and oppotunity that we have had so far. I dont blame those who are collecting unemployment, I know most of them are hard workers trying to feed their families and reach the American dream. I beleive the govt owes the folks, who have kept their noses to the grind stone and lost their jobs due to no fault of their own, some respect and support. now they want to raise taxes on those making over 250K, you know the folks that create jobs. These people in washinton are nearly as worthless as you can get!!

Yeah my neighbor does REALLY well and is so booked she has 2 other face painters who work under her. She also has contracts with some big name local businesses and does their 'kids' day things.

I love baby sitting for her... and we take care of their chickens and things. I hate to ask things of a neighbor though, I don't want them thinking we'd take advantage!

As of right now, I'm exhausted. I was literally up until 1 am filling orders... I'm marketing today, had jams to make, and peppers to can. Turned out to be swamped. I filled out 2 job listings for my husband and 1 for me.

I also reposted on craigslist all the items my husband makes, his business information for handyman services... AND I list I teach beginner canning classes as a 2 hour 'party' type thing where its actually pretty fun and $25 per person 5 person minimum. I''ve been getting bookings for spring canning... but its so late in the season no canning classes right now.

I really do start my day at 7am and do everything humanly possible to take care of my family and get us out of this.

I guess when I read this thread and see so much said about the unfortunate sucking off the system... it kills me... I see myself working harder then some of the people who drive around in there BMW's oblivious to whats going on! But its true... there are suckers all over the system, and its hard to weed through the leeches. I just want people to know if I had work to give... I would hire someone right away.

In fact, if my husband was actually working I would love to hire someone to babysit while I'm busy now, and I usually pay pretty good for that!

I know one thing, when its time to pass on the love... I will be passing it around leaps and bounds!

I hear ya, I try not to worry about what other people are doing, I know there are people out there working the system. But frankly this country isn't in debt because of that. That is such a small fraction of what this country gives out in aid and funding 2 wars.
I can only be responsible for what I do.I'm a veteran but I won't take the benefits because I feel there are other people who need them more. It is a tough economic environment now , My DH has a wonderful job and it's a good thing cause i'm an Artist and nobody is buying paintings right now.

You have been going through this a long time. What kind of work do you do? If I could make $500-600 we'd be doing good. Is that monthly or weekly? Either way we would be okay. I'm looking for something part time now.

I took it upon myself to go into business for myself... to help out in 2008. We've grown... a LOT! I work with local farms now, and sell online as well. But that money is 'per month'. I have to work a lot of hours to get that and it costs me a bit upfront... but I've built the clients over time.

Problem is, I am applying for full time and part-time jobs as well as for my husband. Its a race to see who gets what first. He's been unemployed since Feb 1 2010... I thought we had until January... so I don't know if he qualifies for a tier 2 unemployment extention or not? I filled last week, got a notice we has 'less then 2 weeks' left. Then I checked the deposit this week from ESC and it was only $140, not the usual $298. And when I checked the site, it left me a 1-800 # and no other info.

I mean, I'd hate to do it... but we either use our tax money to start paying some bills... or its time to start cashing out the IRA.

Luckily... we're only 30.

Did they cut your payment because of the 500.00 you were making per month....think they will do that, at least in the pass they did.
