It is a Union Job but the training is free and you can work doing whatever you want after. They don't even asses a monetary figure to the training it is truly on the job and then classes at the hall itself or at the sugar shack in New Hampshire where my husband and Brother in law set some poles. DH is the president of the local so he can put in a good word for him.The only thing you pay for is your books about $200 and that can be waived if you have a hardship. This is a good Union, we take care of our people. We have a brotherhood fund (DH's idea) 5cents an hr comes out of everyones pay and if anyone has a hardship (death of family member)house burns down car accident. We chip in pay bills give food gift cards. There is a $20 fee to file the application with NEAT because it weeds out the people who aren't serious.
Work does run out we just finished with a lay off ,lay off's usually run from a couple days to a couple of months , but they just won the bid on a job in maine that is going to take 10yrs to finish.Huge wind farm, its passed all the legislature and is starting soon He will have to travel maybe to maine, nh,vermont or farther. That's the tough part but they put him up in a hotel
He also learns how to drive a truck and one of guys at the hall usually DH will bring him to the registry with one of their trucks and sponsor him for his CDL.
My brother started to go through the apprenticeship and found out he didn't like heights so he got his equipment opperators license and worked for the Union that way , he applied for the T last year and they called him up and he is soon to be a journeyman T lineman in boston , he loves it.
PM me if you want
