Anybody lose their unemployment yesterday?

My husband will be losing his unemployment if nothing gets past. He is NOT lazy whatsoever. My husband made ~$80,000/year working as a Project Manager for a civil engineering firm where he worked predominantly on the civil design (design for grading, drainage, sewer, water, storm drain, ADA Access & Compliancy, etc) for new schools (K-12) and new additions to existing schools. He occasionally worked in residential and commercial development. He spent 18 years in the industry and busted his butt for the company as well as us at home. He put me through college during the last few years as well. THERE IS NO WORK IN HIS INDUSTRY IN OUR AREA!!! The state of California has been closing schools and cancelling projects that were scheduled to be built. They are not going to be starting new ones! If there was work in the field, he would be working right now. I get extremely frustrated when people say things that imply that the unemployed are lazy. YOU HAD TO BE WORKING TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS!!! My husband has always taken pride in that he was hard working, well respected with his clients and coworkers and that he could support us without me working. Being unemployed has made him feel like he is worthless now.

If he could find a job, he'd be working! OUR AREA HAS ~20% UNEMPLOYMENT!! HUNDREDS of people line up outside when a fast food place says they will be hiring. A job expo has to close its doors by 10 am when they reached maximum occupancy! People with Master's degrees are flipping burgers. There is very little work in our area for even part-time work.

When DH got laid off, I was still in school. My PT research assistant job and his unemployment paid very little. We went through what savings we did have quickly. Now, that his unemployment will be ending, we don't have that cushion anymore.

Because I work and the nature of my line of work (environmental work; geologist/hydrogeologist), I have been taking extra hours at work to help with the loss of income (I am salary and get paid straight time, not time and a half, etc). Up through T-giving, I worked 60 hour weeks and for over a month straight (NO DAYS OFF). I don't make anywhere near what DH made, so things are tight now. When his unemployment ends, things will be very tight. I should also note that in order for me to get a higher paying position (and much better experience with a reputable firm), I had to take a job in the big city (Orange County, CA). I commute 74 miles one way to work every day. In CA traffic, that is 4 hours roundtrip minimum, not uncommon to be 5 hours. So, add in 60 hours a week billable hours (overhead hours like proposals, etc are not billable) and 20-25 hours a week in travel time, and I am exhausted. I LOVE my job, wouldn't leave it, but also understand that I am sacrificing time with my husband to ensure that our bills get paid and I get the quality experience I need that can lead to higher pays and eventually promotions. I need to work my butt off since I know that there are people out there who would like my job and have strong resumes.

The only thing that has been keeping my husband and I afloat is our frugal lifestyle (now getting even more frugal) and the fact that he supported me through college, which has now provided me with a job that pays well enough to get our bills paid (little left over, but we are extremely grateful for what we have!!). We are EXTREMELY grateful for my passion in a less impacted field (compared to his) and that I have found work. We realize we could be in a worse situation. But, we also feel the strain and struggle since we live paycheck to paycheck on a much more frugal budget....and that is with his unemployment! Come the end of his benefits and we will be hurting, even with my working.

What do we do for food, utilities, etc? We keep our bills low by being conscious of electricity (lights off, etc), only heat our house at night (if necessary, and it is usually set at 60*F or so), garden in the summer and can stuff to last us, shop at the lower priced grocery stores, rice and veggies is always tasty and cheap, stews are cheap, pasta is always a safe bet, drink water or homemade iced tea only, make our own laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent.....whatever we can do. If the temps are too bad, we will tuen the heat off and use more blankets.

My mom has been in the same industry with MORE experience. She has been unemployed for 2 years. She has sent out over 200 resumes (not exaggerating) nationwide and her employment has run out. What is she suppose to do? She has been applying for whatever she can, but can't find anything in her area (SE Idaho, which is currently being hit very hard by the economy). My mom is looking at losing her house if she can't find something. She called today and said she may have found a part-time job. This is the first lead in a long time!

If my mom loses her house, then that means that my mom and my brother will have to move in with me. That leaves me to support 2 additional adults in my home (plus DH).

The big companies sent the jobs overseas. They "lobbied" the government for the right to do so. Certain 1980's politicians were very enthusiastic about helping Ford (for example) build factories in Mexico with equipment salvaged from American factories.

Sadly, Mexico was a success story. The Machiadores took great pride in their work, educated their children, and raised their standard of living while making excellent products at lower cost. That was not good enough for American companies so they moved the factories again, this time to places they could exploit ruthlessly. You may be driving a vehicle containing parts made by Chinese political prisoners.

Harsh? History. If you are really interested in history, Google "fascism". Hint: corporate control of government. Look at USA events for any preferred time period (hint: 2001 onward is easy to understand).

Be that as it may, I won't work for large companies as anything other than a contractor in a business-to-business relationship. At least then I have the slight protection of a contract between a large company and a tiny company. I feel for the people who are employees, ex- or otherwise.

This whole mess is why I raise chickens. My birds are my food security. And I love them too.

I feel for those who have lost or may lose their jobs, especially those who have dependents.

There's an attitude from some that, if you lose your job, you simply go out and get another one. I can only assume that people with that view have never suffered unemployment, or perhaps they have wealthy families to bail them out. Until you go through it yourself you can't imagine the wrenching feeling in the gut when you are thrown out of your job and every time the possible consequences hit you. Even welfare support is limited in amount and governments are getting tighter about who qualifies and for how long. Even with a bit of State aid the worry son becomes debilitating. Eventually, you see yourself staring over the edge of an abyss with all of your other options behind you. No-one here, I'm sure, welcomes that state of mind.

So, please, let's assume that everyone here who is unemployed is going his or her best to solve the problem and leave out the 'Get off your behind' comments.

We're a military family, my husband having served for almost 18 years in the US Navy, with another two to go. I felt like a grump when I made him re-enlist, but looking at the economy I knew he just had to or we'd lose the house. I work part-time in town, down from 3 days to 1 day (4.25 hours a week) and had to close my own business when the economy tanked and religious groups stopped buying incense. I go to graduate school full time, which doesn't allow me to work some jobs since I need to be sitting in class AT 5pm. My student loan company hates me, I could go for the deferment but I thought it was important to pay off my undergraduate student loan, even as I'm going to graduate school full time. Why penalize me when I'm paying NOW even though I don't have to? Makes no sense at all.

We keep hoping he'll make Chief, with the big pay bump, but despite fighting two wars - Congress keeps making fewer and fewer Chiefs when we really desperately need more leaders among the enlisted folks.

Support Our Troops doesn't seem to mean much anymore - we keep losing benefits, they are talking pay freezes and our insurance keeps going up (the vicious rumor about our "Free Insurance" has got to die a quick death) - so our blood, sweat and tears means much less than it used to as we send our beloved servicemembers off to fight the politicians wars.

I hate to tell you but you guys would be better off if he stayed in for 30. We stayed in for 20 and would have stayed in longer but my husband is 100% disabled due to his military service. He's fighting for his bennies now for it.

Free insurance? Thats a joke! It's looked down on almost as badly as Medicaid and its surely not free.

I lost my job October 1st. I served five years in the Marine Corps and then went to work for NASA. I was a bad kid but worked hard to turn things around and be a responsible adult that actually contributes to society instead of mooching off of it. 10 years at NASA and now I have an over-inflated mortgage, taxes, homeowners, blah, blah, blah. Why do I feel bad about collecting unemployment and why is it all of a sudden, because I've been laid off from a program that is being killed, I feel like I'm 18 again and freeloading? Why is it so difficult to find employment? Why does this suck so bad? I haven't lost my unemployment....yet. I have to admit though, I have enjoyed being home. I'm getting a lot done around the house and I spend a lot of time with my "Ladies", chicks and ducks.

I guess I've rambled. thaiturkey, I've seen the abyss and there's no jobs there either.

I believe my FIL will be affected, which is a case that is sad with not much hope in it

. Luckily they are frugal, and my MIL works for the same company I do, and pay is fairly good all around. He was laid off from a stamping place, union, cannot get another job, same deal as Redhen stated out nicely, but even if he wanted to, no one wants to hire someone that looks like he will drop dead on the spot. He has weight struggles, that he battles all the time (I believe he's well over 400lbs). He needs surgery or something for his hips and knees, can't walk well, and not a soul would hire him, even if the union wouldn't play their games with people.

I hope to talk to my MIL and talk about trying to get him to apply for SSI. The lawyer that worked my dad's case is still working. My FIL is a good man, but is in an unfortunate position.

As someone who ISN'T struggling *too much*, I'm trying to make a conscious effort to donate more. We are still catching up from my husband's lay off (another union deal - don't look for work!! Ahhhh!!), but at least we have two good incomes now. I'm very grateful for that.

So, your husband is employed by an organization, which uses thuggery and intimidation to keep people in line, and now, he's trapped. Probably, an organization, where the big dogs never miss a paycheck, and live pretty high on the hog, yet, money can't be set aside for an inhouse unemployment check....You want the same people, small businesses and corporations, who the unions will gladly harm, for a few extra dollars, to foot the bill, when your husband is out of work.

It really is no different than the GM Bailout....Low skill level workers; and yes, it doesn't take much talent, to stand on an assemblyline and put a nut on a bolt, making exorbitant wages, with over the top benefits/retirement packages, who have allowed the honchos to rob their own piggybank, then, turn around and demand that the taxpayer buy a car and give them some extra money, because they couldn't manage their own checkbook.

At some point, you run out of OPM [other people's money] and the madness must stop.

If not now, when?

I'm self employed and scrape by, day to day. I make what ever the market allows on any given job, meaning, in today's market I can't charge according to my talent and tools, because people will simply put off the work, until the price drops.
