I hate to say it, but sometimes a career change is what it takes. My DH worked as a mechanic for years,..then it became near impossible for him to find work. So he got his CDL's,...he has been working steady for over 10 years now driving truck,..not to say the bottom won't fall out of that too. If it does he will do something else.

I understand what you are saying completely. My dad was in the same boat. He also was a truckdriver, but he became diabetic and lost his job. He pretty much had to take early retirement, which sucked for him. He is on his SS disabillity now, but he has went downhill so fast healthwise. I know it is hard when you have health issues,..but maybe he can find something,...you never know what is ahead.
