I'm raising my current batch of red broilers and cornish X on sprouts, kefir and a few other things. Some nutritional yeast, kelp, scrambled eggs+shell. They seem to be doing very well. Yesterday, I blended the sprouts with my immersion blender and it seemed to help them eat it better, since they're only 2 weeks old, but they've been eating them whole without a problem. Just seemed like the Cornish Xs were slightly smaller than the last batch.
Good thing is that nobody has had runny, stinky poo. No pasty butt. I'm hoping I won't have any leg problems. My last batch of Cornish had a high percent of leg issues on commercial feed. I don't mind feeding them for a longer time if they stay healthier. I like the looks of the red broilers, although even the Cornish are scratching and foraging in the grass this time.
I'm sprouting mung beans, fenugreek, wheat and rye. I add mustard every once in awhile. Fenugreek is by far their favorite. I need to go to the store and pick up lentils. Any idea which color lentil sprouts best? My yellow/orang ones didn't sprout. Tomorrow, I'll get to the feed store and get BOSS.
I probably should add some soy bean meal and oyster shell but I've been thinking the kefir is quite a lot of calcium, the egg shells are calcium and phosphorous and they've been getting a fair amount of protein from mung beans, fenugreek, kefir and nutritional yeast.
I'm very excited to see how these chicks grow compared to my last batch raised on Purina Flock Raiser. If I can eliminate the leg issues, any slow down in growth will be worth it.
I'm getting some silky chicks this week and they'll get the same diet, blended, of course.
Has anyone found other options to prevent sprouts from molding and spoiling? That's my biggest concern. I was wondering if a dash of ACV or lemon juice would work. Maybe I just to break down and go buy the grapefruit seed extract.
