i don't feed the sprouted oats as a grain feed as part of their regular ration( sprouts 1 to 3 days old). I like winter eggs so i feed them as a green feed ( sprouts 4 days and older) supplement in addition to their regular ration to bring the girls into lay and give the cock added vigor which he will pass on to his get in his sperm.
Best,
karen

I sprout for green feed in winter, when everything is covered in deep snow. During the growing season, they can go forage for what they need out on the property. Since I sprout for them in freezing weather, I'm doing it in the house.

I did some 'test' sprouting recently and found that the girls really didn't care for it. They free range on nice days (a lot of rain lately

) and the grass is still green so maybe that's why they weren't excited. I did feed it at day 4, so maybe I'll try again with 3-day-old sprouts.

My chickens are picky about a lot of things when they have good forage. When they're looking at a couple feet of snow, it improves their appetite for a lot of foods.

From the very first "test" sprouts, mine have preferred 3-day sprouts to any kind of bagged feed. For that matter, they'll come back for happily foraging and gobble up 3-day wheat and lentil sprouts.

I have got a bag of whole corn that my chickens are not terribly interested in. I thought about trying to sprout it. Anyone ever tried to sprout corn?
