anybody raise sprouts to feed the chickens?

Yep, you can throw wheat berries whole. Even if they won't sprout, if you soak them they will be a bit softer plus a bit larger but they're plenty small enough for even a bantam to eat.

My wheat sprouts great! It sprouts faster than anything else I use. I don't use it often unless I forget to start a new batch for several days. Wheat is a quick fix for sprouts here.

Some people have purposely mixed seeds and I haven't heard anything that would suggest its not a good idea. What seeds? Let us know how it works out for you.

Seed mixes are totally normal when you look at the stuff sold for human consumption (like Mumm's). No reason it should be any different just because chickens are eating it.

BOSS is mixed by someone (can't remember who) with wheat. First she puts the boss in her soak container and then adds the wheat on top. Wheat is heavy and holds the BOSS down. Then she adds water very slowly so that the BOSS isn't stirred up and rise to the top.

I stopped worrying about how buoyant BOSS is. The hulls will stay wet even though the top ones rise above the water. They sprout very well.

After the initial soak, it doesn't matter where the seeds are. You can stir them all together and your BOSS sprouts will be dispersed among your other seeds.

I soaked chia, flax, and quinoa. I know the quinoa has a film and the flax and chia have a "jelly" outer coating so it will be interesting.

I found some wheatberries in my fridge where I keep my weird grains. Got those soaking this morning.

Anyone ever try amaranth?

I'm going to try this tonight!

Can I mix seeds and sprout them together?
I used to keep all my seeds separate when sprouting them and then mix them together before feeding to my flock. Now, I put a scoop of each kind of seed (Boss seed mix, oats, wheat, barley) in a 1/2 gal Ball jar with a sprouting lid on top. The BOSS does float to the top while soaking but it sprouts just fine. I soak overnight then rinse the seeds morning and night until they are ready to be fed to the birds. They are usually sprouted and ready to be fed by day 3-4.
