anybody raise sprouts to feed the chickens?

Check my byc page. I feed sprouted wheat, oat, boss, as part of their staple diet, not a treat thing. The 3 grains do not provide complete nutrition, so they are mixed with dry ingredients.

My sprout ages are not all the same, so the nutritional structure is varied. Also I would not worry one bit about too much protein in sprouts... Just stop and think what chickens eat when free ranging.................................... Young grass shoots, and bugs.....

I am a massive fan of charcoal in my planting mixes... I make bio char in barrels, I burn fires and put them out just to get charcoal, I sift the ashes from the wood stove to get charcoal.... Yes I like charcoal..... and now another potential use.....

Hi Everyone,

I am new to BYC and I have 18 Chickens - Reds & Plymouth Rocks along with 2 parrots.

Can someone tell me what BOSS is?

I sprouted some chick peas (garbonzo beans) and have been giving ~ 1/2 cup between 4 chickens. Now my one buff rock has a messy bottom!

They have just been getting their normal layer crumbles, Boss and a bit of Romaine lettuce so I am sure it is the addition of the sprouts. She had a beautiful clean fluffy bottom and now it is messy and it's winter so not sure how to get her cleaned up.

My first guess would be the lettuce... It could be the sprouts, it is a "live food" can take a body some time to adjust..

My 26 wintering birds eat about 8 cups of sprouts a day.. (wheat, oats, boss) I have no experience with chick peas for the chicks...

I have been giving them lettuce since they were quite young and I only give them one leaf each so I doubt it that. I am so disappointed about the sprouts I thought I was doing something nice for them now I have to figure out a way to clean their bottoms in the cold weather.

I think I'll just stick with their regular diet.
