oh no, I'm not into blame america at all I just see us with military bases in 130 of about 190 countries I am more of a type who wants to lessen our presence in areas where folks aren't needed and beef up our borders.

X2.

When Uranus (planet or rebelliousness) transits the sign Aires in 2011, the poo will be hitting the fan for sometime.
1960's Uranus transits the peace loving sign of Libra (peace movement)
Late 1960's into 70's Uranus transits passionate Scorpio (Sexual revolution)
80's Uranus in philosophical Sagittarius (new age movement)
90's Uranus in business like Capricorn (Suit and Tie business revolution) I don't have the right words for this one, sorry
Late 90, early 2000's into techno.com Aquarius we had the internet revolution,
since then it has been transiting Pisces, sign of undoing, (stock market, big banks),
Aries is the sign of self identity and war. Doesn't necessarily mean war, but viewing current circumstances.

You are right about that, sometimes I do think that we take on to many of other countries burdens. All we get out of it is nothing but the blame for every thing.Really ticks me off sometimes.

We wouldn't be in a single one of those places if it wasn't deemed highly necessary. As much as I hate seeing our guys in harm's way, I've finally realized that. Like it? No. Want it it to change? Sure. But understand why, yes, also.

I hope our next President isn't macho and in to pre-emptive wars for whatever reason. I do worry about the troops in Korea. When I was in the Army we had 212,000 in Europe. We had about 100,000 in Korea. I think there's a lot less now. Our Army in Korea is near the the border. I'm sure the AF is a lot farther back. The Army is in a lot more danger.

Korea's AF isn't much. I would worry about our fly boys because of SAM's. The ground support for the AF should be fairly safe. Kind of like the Gulf War. Danger from Scuds, but not bullets. The Koreans have a ton of soldiers. That's where the danger is. They'll come over the demilitarized zone like a swarm of ants.

I figure Iran and Korea are going to get their nukes eventually. Not much we can do about it. The two wars we have had, have crippled us horribly. We don't have the ground forces to do much about it. Korea and Iraq would both be air wars. Can't win a war that way. Just run them off like the 1st Gulf War. Korea has a really kick (you know what) Army. The soldiers that went to Korea said those ROC soldiers were really hard core and trained a lot harder than the US troops usually did. That says a lot because the US has some of the best trained troops in the world. Of course a lot of our guys in Afghanistan are getting some great training in those mountains. Korea has the freezing cold though. It's a lot harder to maneuver when you are wearing 4 layers of cold weather gear. Shooting with those mittens that have the index finger is hard to do too.

And let's not forget that the last time we went to Korea, dubbed the Korean War, war was never actually declared... it was merely an exercise, occupation, activity... so was Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan... no president has bothered to go through legal channels to declare war since our bout with Hitler! So, them obeying the law would make for a nice change... instead of just shooting first and counting bodies later.

I live closer to Korea than most BYC members and I see nothing to worry about. Well, nothing new at least. The hostilities between the North and South of that sadly divided country never came to an end. Foreign troops from one country or another may have gone home long ago but the locals armies face each other over the border every day.

Peace might come to the country one day if foreign powers kept their noses out. The island that was attacked is closer to the North's coastline than the South's. The border just there is disputed. Yet, despite that friction, every year foreign military from the West turn up to play war games right there - right under the noses of the North Korean army. There was already an aircraft carrier on it's way when the North attacked the island and claimed that the military exercises were a provocation. I can see the point being made.

Another issue is the matter of the succession to the leadership in the North. There are rumours that plans are not going smoothly. It's known that the Northern government will make very strong gestures to the rest of the world if it is put under pressure so the Western military exercises provided and opportunity for either the political leadership or the military to show it's strength. It doesn't take much of a brain for that to have been anticipated.

Then there's the matter of the North's possible nuclear weaponry. Well, if you were an autocratic leader of poor country and constantly being described by Western powers as a thorn in the side and a threat, wouldn't you prepare to defend yourself? The same might go for Iran.

In a nutshell, most of us will sit on our backsides and have nothing to worry about if fighting flares up. What we have to consider, though, is whether it would be worthwhile risking the lives of our sons and daughters to fight in a country that's nothing to with them or us. So, let's leave them alone and stop provoking other countries into hating the West. Then we shall have less to worry about and more taxpayers money to spend on getting the Western economies back on their feet.

Don't poke the bear!

It does concern me because it seems like countries push and push until military action is justified. I agree that war is a stimulus for the economy. It is unfortunate that we will not live to see a time when there is no war.A time when all resources are used to make life better for all. I doubt such a time will ever come, but it sure would be nice.

It is probably nothing to worry about, but I think I will refresh my supplies. I remember the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Was spending a few weeks there, but luckily got out and back to Hungary before it was really bad. It was like a dream.Could not believe people started killing each other.

Would it be such a bad thing if countries closed bases and pulled all their troops home?

Hey I ride the same boat! The only time I am updated is when I have to ride along with my DH somewhere and he has NPR on on the radio.

And here I thought I was the only one. I am happy in my peaceful world, too, Bat Cave.

Thai, we did attempt to stay out of the affairs of other countries but our hand was forced by those same people (think WWII). We have become the 'Police of the world' due to events like that and now how do you back out of such a position? If we stand back and do not intervene we are chastised by other nations, if we do step up and try to help we are told to butt out. It is a no-win situation either way.

I would love for our military to come home and use those men and the money to help people here at home. Work on the security and border issues we have. Help the areas ravaged by Mother Nature.

A nice dream but improbable.
