It's hard to stay enthusiastic about work as people get older, people get kind of jaded after seeing various situations and feeling like they've gotten treated unfairly. It's also hard to stay excited about something that you know isn't what you really want to do or doesnt' speak to your interests.
I've learned it's very hard to do top quality work when you're sick, misdiagnosed, getting 2 hrs of sleep a night for 18 months and dragging yourself around in constant pain! Been there done that one!
But I think it's really, very, very important to have a love of what you do in life. I don't believe for even a second, that the key to this is finding 'the perfect job'. Cats and birds, no dogs, exotic, pay is great, no math? I click better with dogs than cats...no...I do not for even a part of a SECOND believe that the search for the perfect job is the answer.
I think the key is that you find a type of work, set your sights on it, and create in yourself, the energy, the love, the excitement, the knowledge, the pride in a good job well done.
I think that what you do for a living and how you do it, should be a really very exciting and rewarding part of your life - EVERY DAY. I think this sounds ridiculous to some worn out workers, but I think you should bounce out of bed every single day, excited about what you have to do and really proud of yourself and the unique contribution you make. I think it is wonderful to look back and think, I did a really good job on that, and I made a contribution that no one else would have made quite the same way.
I think what God wants for us, is a rich and satisfying life. Not just at home, but in everything we do. As someone said you can peel a potato to perfection and it will glorify God (Chariots of fire, I think).
I think that we should work really hard from the start to get a good education and wind up doing something that we aim at, and feel really passionate about, that we feel really does some good, and makes a difference in something that means something to you. I don't for a second think that needs to be something really fancy. But I think it needs to be something practical that sustains you.
Education is the key. The education I got gave me a fantastic foundation. It allowed me to steer my own ship, and even, to make changes in career as I discovered new abilities and interests. That beginning is critical.
I think it's very important to 'swallow a little medicine' and work hard at things you think you don't like or aren't good at. Time and time again I thought I wasn't good at something, I stuck a stick in it and stirred it a little bit and found out, hey! Guess what! I love doing this, and if I work at it I will very good at it.
Don't ever...EVER believe anyone who tells you you can't do something. Try it. Try it with an open mind, dive in with all your being, with belief that you'll be guided in the right direction, that you can do anything you throw your heart into.
You make that great feeling by working at it.
