Anyone else hatching 6/25? Chicks are here!

Welcome, Sundance! Whenever you candle your RIR eggs, let us know how it goes.

Oh, LOL! Yes, I totally type "y'all." Technically, I am a yankee, but I moved down South at a young age and picked up a few things, ha-ha. Southerners are great! And so is the weather. I have relatives up North, but I probably won't move back, lol!

Well, I didn't candle early last night, and I can't do it now, either! I have to log off and get ready for a family thing, and won't back until late tonight... but I will still do it! The darker, the better, lol. I'll let y'all(

) know what I see... or think I see.

The candling results are in! One was just plain infertile, while another had a blood ring (my mother and I nervously cracked it open, and were right!). The rest are all veining! So, that's 10 out of 11 fertile eggs developing. Weeeeee!

One question. When you are candling an egg, does the embryo really move around as you spin the egg, or does it stay relatively stationary? I just wanted to make sure I have turned my eggs enough times (I have slacked due to being busy these last few days). The embryos, or circular thingies around the dots sort of stayed in the same place, but the dark dots still moved around. Hope that made sense.... Still, babies! Weeeee!

I am too new at this to able to help you there. Good luck - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that those eggs keep going strong!

(Yeah, it is nerve-wracking opening those blood ring eggs, isn't it.)
As for the movement, the embryo does stay relatively stationary, but the yolk still has a lot of "play" and will show moving shadow areas around the embryo. Is that what you meant?

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Yes, Paganbird. I think what you mean is what I meant, lol. I candled the eggs again tonight, and I "think" everyone is still good. I know that I can see little moving dots around in them. I'm such a newb, so I'm just leaving all the eggs in, and trying not to worry... trying....

How is everyone else fairing?

I'm worrying about my temps. I have no reason to... I just do that a lot the closer I get to hatch. I wake up and check the temps. I check again after breakfast. After lunch. 10 minutes after that... you get the idea.
I'm gonna have to move my older chicks out of the brooder soon. I was really hoping for warmer weather by now. This time last year, I was able to put the 5 week olds out in the barn. This year, it's been so cool at night, I may not be able to. It was in the 40s last night.
My little silkies are about a month old now. They are too cute! I especially love their adorable, big, black, extra-toed, feathered feet!
Silkies are awesome!
When I first saw them, I thought they were weird. Then, curiousity got the best of me... I started studying up on them. Then I wanted to hatch a couple. Now I'm hoping all 14 of the silkie babies in the bator hatch! I am addicted to their cuteness!
I'm also getting excited about the "mystery" eggs from my friend at work. I wonder what kinds of chickens I'll get? The med/small white eggs are the ones that I'm really curious about. I've never had white egg layers before. I can't think what would lay white eggs that size, but it'll be fun to find out!
Here's my 1 month old partridge silkie "Zoot" sitting on my lap while I type out this update:

We have our 2nd batch of Silkies in our bator due on 25th!!!

We have 2 black beauties from our first batch, since they're inseparable, we called them Puff n' Stuff! (Stuff has the Rogue-like[from X-men] gray streak on her head)

This is from there first time outside last week...

Moved to this thread for my hatch due on the 24th/25th. I have 11 BBS orps from Sandy(tuffoldhen) and put in 2 of my BO eggs in there just to see if they were fertile. I have 3 year old BO hens in with my 16 week old roos and they were showing signs of mating so I thought I would throw in some of my own eggs. Low and behold 2 are actually developing. These could be a cross of BO hens over EE, BBS, or SLW roos. It will be interesting to see what they look like if they make it through. Candled on day 7 and 10(last night) and all are still looking very promising. Temps and humidity seem to be holding well. This will be my second hatch.
