My computer keeps freezing up presumably because of the adds. Anyone else having this trouble?

Sorry to hear you're having problems. Here are some things to do to possibly resolve your problem:

  1. Try resetting your computer. Turn it off, wait 2 minutes, turn it back on.
  2. Clear your internet browser's cache / history of files. It's easy to do and almost as important as taking out the trash at home! See instructions here and here.
  3. Determine if the problem is because of your browser and/or plugins and extensions. Download a free version of either Google Chrome or Firefox and see if the thing that was broken now works.
  4. If you're still having problems, continue to the steps below:

If after following those steps, here are a few questions that will help us find, duplicate, and hopefully resolve the problem you are having. Go through these questions and reply with all the details of your problem:

  • Describe your problem in as much detail as possible!
  • What is the URL of the page that you had problems?
  • Did you receive any error messages? If yes, what were they? (please copy and paste the entire message, screenshots are best)
  • What were the exact steps you took before having the problem? Please be as specific as possible so we can reproduce exactly what you did. Go step by step, provide links, details, clicks, etc.
  • How long has the problem been happening? When did it start? If only one time, what day and time did it happen?
  • VERY IMPORTANT: Which browser and version are you using (eg., Firefox 3.5.9, Internet Explorer 7, etc.)
  • Have you tried disabling all your browser plugins and/or extensions? (Some of these conflict with website features and tools)
  • Have you deleted your internet cache / browser history of files and tried again?
  • VERY IMPORTANT: Have you tried a different browser (we suggest Google Chrome or Firefox)?

Yes many of us have. We have let them know there is a problem but so far no solutions. The only thing I find that helps is disabling JavaScript. I also believe it's something with the ads as disabling java resolves it. Then before visiting. Any other sight it needs to be turned on again. Very annoying.

If using Chrome, try this:

Settings/Advanced Settings/Privacy/Content Settings/Plug-ins/(change from default setting to `Click To Play' (if you need to re enable Flash - for Youtube, for instance, just click on icon to run - or make change permanent with Exceptions option).

Firefox + NoScript + AdBlockPlus = no ads and safe browsing

Install Firefox. Download and install 2 Add-ons for Firefox: NoScript and AdBlockPlus

I've been logged in for the last day waiting for an answer, and have had no ads.

Like ivan3 says for Chrome, you will have to unblock for certain pages to see content like youtube. NoScript has an easy mouse over unblock feature (image). No going into Settings or Preferences to adjust for each page. AdBlockPlus I don't pay any attention to. Picture below shows NoScript and all the pages that will load for this site. I temporarily unblocked "backyardchickens" and "yahooapis." "Yahooapis" was necessary to see the captcha to create an account, and to see the posting format options to upload this picture. Otherwise you'd probably not have to change anything to use this site. To see the handy mouse over partial comment you'd have to unblock the 2 I unblocked. Still no ad interference experience with those unblocked.

I pony up the $20 to support the site, so I can kill ALL the ads in Preferences, if I like. However, I always run the ads as there is no slow down on this puny 1.5Mb DSL and it helps support BYC. Any member still on dial-up has all my sympathy and the above options will help.

P.S. I ran the Flash ads until they started to serve up full screen overlays triggered by inadvertantly `mouse-rolling' ad (that eats CPU cycles/bandwidth without explicit permission). Will continue to run static ads - gotta feed the kitty.

I have both Firefox and Mocrosoft as browsers and get the following whenever I click on a photo for a closer look. Sometimes it freezes up and sometimes I can continue looking when I click that I want to stop script:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.
