With that being said... No, i'm not really doing christmas this year... no motivation. Having the same family get togethers so that will be great... but no decorating or tree or lights up this year.
redhen says Bah-humbug..

Im sorry to hear that. If I knew where you lived, I'd be over there at about 2am and set up atree in your yard!! Just to say "Nah-nah..nah-nah!!"

(then I'd ask to borrow your incubator!!)

This is the first Christmas ever that I won't be seeing my daughter. She lives in Texas and can't afford the trip this year. Bah humbug! You can bet I'll be using up some majpr minutes on my cell phone, though.

Best to clarify this. Christmas trees were not banned in the UNITED STATES by law at any time that I can recall. However, they were Banned in Massachusetts Bay COLONY back in 1659, 117 years before the Declaration of Independence and the start of the American Revolution. It was hardly the United States at that point. We could talk about a lot of insane laws that the Puritans passed in their quest to force everyone to live in compliance with Puritan religious beliefs in Mass. Bay Colony, but I'd best not do that here...

There may have been other times here and there that some specific town or other government entity in the U.S. banned some portion of holiday celebrations. Please make sure that you understand that if this did occur, it was a LOCAL law, not anything federal. And, if it was before 1776 then it wasn't the United States. (Or, before 1783, if you hold to the opinion that there was no US until after the American Revolution ended...)

Something else I always thought was odd. All the people out there wanting to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. But isn't the word Holiday derived from Holy Days? I guess it's a little more encompassing of all the religious beliefs but wonder if the pagens and athiests are insisting on saying Happy Holidays too?

Well not decorating up etc. Guess We are planning on moving the week after so... Kinda depressing too since the youngest grandson is 2 this year and actualy enjoy the tree and stuff. We aren't buying gifts either just for the 2 grandson's.Everyone is financialy busted here.We hope to at least have a family dinner although it will probably be eaten on the stacks of moving boxe's.Maybe next year will be better when We get in the new place and get out from under some of the financial strain.I am able to have some bird's at the new place so VERY excited over that.I had to get rid of over half my flock this week and new potbelly piggy but hope they got good home. Hope everyone one has a Nice one whatever they decide to do.

I agree! My son just turned 21 a couple of days ago but for over 10 years now, per my influence, and disgust of the "modern" meaning of Christmas, we have downsized our spending. We still have a few in the family who get cought up in it, but we began each picking one name in the extended family, kid picks a kid, and adult picks another adult. We also buy one gift for each other in our immediate family and fill a stocking.

Christmas is NOT about how much you get, and I worked hard to teach my son and my nieces, nephews, and brothers the TRUE meaning. It is about enjoying the sights, the sounds, and family gatherings. It's spending the day together and sharing your favorite dish, and lots of funny stories. The amazing thing is how little stress we now have during the holidays.

To those who still get roped in each year, I'm hoping that you re-think your values and get them in proper order.
For those with a similar view as my own, I am very happy for you and your families.

Well I love the entire season starting with Halloween and ending with New Years. Familly is far flung so it is just hubby, naked cat, whippet, naked rats, finches and I. Has been for years. Have not had a tree forever-someone will either climb it, pull it down or eat something and puke or have a psychotic episode. But it is a day for enjoying familly-even just our little familly-watch all the holiday specials from the fifties-cook a turkey with all the trimmings, maybe never get out of our pajamas-take a nap-even feed the horses, ponies and donkey and chickens in our pajamas. Even the chickens had pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving courtesy of an overcooked crust and over abundance of filling. I agree the holidays are what you make them-our little town is decorated and looks lovely-the lights on the houses are beautiful-it may snow-what is not to like. Christmas parties-holiday parties-share some gifts with those special to me-winning the "tackiest" christmas contest ever with my cubicle neighbors for the second time maybe-remember Christmas past-it is what you make it. And we make it fab.

No, offense, but where have you been the last couple of years?? They've been denigrating Christmas for awhile. Stores were not saying Merry Christmas, just Happy Holidays. I will not frequent a store that says Happy Holidays. After all, Jesus is the reason for the season. I for one will be saying Merry Christmas. I'm sick of all the political correctness.

On the other hand, instead of my immediate family and in-laws exchanging gifts that we REALLY don't need, and could do without, we're donating CHICKENS!!

, and maybe two goats to either Heifer Project or Samaritan's Purse, or some other organization like that. I LOVE the chicken idea, 'cause it's the gift that keeps on giving!

Merry Christmas!
Jen

I don't understand why people get upset over stores having their workers say Happy Holidays. Is it such a horrible thing that they are trying to encompass all the holidays happening at this time of year? After all, Jesus isn't the reason for my season, so if I work at a retail store, why should I be forced into saying Merry Christmas just because that is what you celebrate?

I understand what the OP is saying about not liking the commercialization. Chanukah doesn't have near the commercialization as Christmas but I still don't care for what it has. After all, it is only a minor holiday. I can't imagine if our High Holy Days were to become something like Christmas, but I would still celebrate them in my own way because they are important and that's what G-d wants me to do.

*Just to clarify, I am not offended in the least when someone wishes me a Merry Christmas even though I don't celebrate it. I know they are just trying to be nice and brighten my day and I think that is great.
