Anyone else receive INFERTILE $70 Black Copper marans Eggs 12/2008?

Thanks Brindle...it's looking like this is a disease...which I THINK is different than a virus? Not curable, and lots of deaths. My poor birds.

I think one of the best things you can do is call Peter Brown at First State Vet. Someone else already posted the link. He has mucho experience catering to people like us, who keep chickens for pets, breeding, or showing. He will walk you through this - it may not be free, I think he charges for a consult now if you don't buy anything, but he will help you (er... with the ILT, not the egg situation).

Thanks Mountain.
I am actually getting an order ready, now. Although, I think $19.99 is well worth it for a consult. I had no idea that they did that. I have relied on BYC for a LOT. But I know there are many questions that only a professional can answer.

For the record, regarding my original post, I did contact Bev when this happened w/ the eggs. She told me he was a good guy and was sure he would take care of me. That was soon before he told me that he WOULD take care of me.

I saw many. many, many posts by him on bev's maranschickenclub yahoo group during the whole time I tried to get a hold of him. Unfortunately, I don't have a phone number for him.

Now that I KNOW I'm not the only one. I will be sure to make sure he doesn't do this to someone again.

Thanks

First off, get the vaccine and vaccinate all your birds right away. After vaccinating give the birds a few days and if you have symptomatic birds cull them.

Do not cull your whole flock! It is pointless to lose what you have put into them. ILT does not pass through the egg.

Just don't sell any birds that are currently on your farm. Every new batch of chicks will have to be vaccinated for the next couple years until you feel you have enough birds to replace the exposed flock.

Make sure you practice good bio security so that you don't bring anything new onto your farm or expose others.

A hint on the vaccine, get more than one vial. You are going to need to give a booster and continue to vaccinate any new birds coming in.

Good luck.

Why is it too late to file with Paypal? We had a similar situation on a diaper site where a few people ordered some things and never received them. We all filed a complaint with paypal months after the original situation and most ended up getting their money back. If he still has a paypal account you should be able to get your money as long as you have documentation of the dates you tried to contact him. Where did you find out about these eggs? Is there any way to find out who else may have ordered from him?
I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I sure hope you can get a satisfactory resolution.

Listen to pips & peeps about this ILT disease--she knows what she's talking about. If it was me ,personally, I would cull for this, but she has made a valid suggestion, considering how much you have invested in these.

I ordered eggs last fall that might be from the same person. Out of 13 - 6 did develop but only one hatched. The others didn't look fertile. He told me this spring he would try and get me some more eggs for a good price since I had such a horrible hatch. I never heard from him again. Of course I haven't tried e-mailing him lately. He seems like a nice guy - just doesn't communicate often.

I need to join that yahoo marans group.

This is one of the best posts I have read on here. It seems to catter to my ADD, back and forth. I was looking into Marans, but with everything I have ready I think I'll just stick with the more hardy breeds. As for the virus, I think you have recieved sound advise. However, your willingness to listen to the professional was the smartest thing you could have done. Keep us posted on both subject matters.

Hey! I have marans and mine are not sickly and they breed like rats and I am overrun right now with about thirty beautiful marans pullets in blue, black and copper black. LOL. Not everyone has weak birds. I just heard a report back from my last buy that she got a 60% hatch out of a couple dozen eggs. About half of them I pulled out from the fridge even and sent as extras. Figured it couldn't hurt. She did great!

If you want marans, go for it. They are a frustrating, challenging, rewarding and beautiful breed if you are up for the challenge. You should try it!

Onthespot...I am SOOOOOOOOOOO jealous of your hardy birds! I've been working with Marans for a few years now, and they frustate the poop out of me, but I'm committed to them!
