Wow, that's a unique challenge! Good luck!

Perhaps I shouldn't be...but I'm surprised that such a topic could even merit a single negative response, much less multiple ones.

Tani, good luck. I couldn't do such a thing since I enjoy such a wide range of music and listen depending on my mood.

Most self-proclaimed 'Christian' music makes my ears bleed rather than inspire me. Radio music in general is enough to make me leave a store without buying anything rather than have to sit for another second listening to that.

There are some indie bands who have Christian members and themes (Tooth and Nail label had a lot of great bands come through) that I like, and some old time music with Christian themes I'm very fond of. Come to think of it though, one of my favorite Christian songs is written by a gay atheist. X) It was inspired by the gospel music his grandmother loved to sing and listen to.

I couldn't watch the video on this computer...hopefully it is the right one!

Wow, do you EVER have anything positive to say?

I would like to know how you know that Christian artists are only hoping to make the next big hit. Do you know any personally? Do you know them ALL personally? I didn't think so...

I like a lot of different music too... I listen to some European metal bands (Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica) and rock bands (Nickelback, Daughtry, Evanesence) and hip hop music, none of which have ANYTHING to do with Christianity. I deleted almost 300 non-Christian songs form my music library in preparation for this. So, it's not like it's easy or anything (cause it's not) but it's something to try and do, a sacrifice.

Well, let's just look at the numbers. It took hundreds of years to write the 4 or 500 hymns, which are in most main stream Christian hymnals....In the last 30 years, how many thousands have been cranked out. There is no serious thought going into the writing of the notes, and as I said, as long as there is a homogenous mix of the proper catch words and phrases, it gets thrown into the market.
I go to church, on occasion, and I can tell you that trying to sing some of the modern songs do not lend themselves to hymnal type singing.

I'm not trying to trash the thread. I'm simply making an observation. That is the problem, today, which was mentioned in another thread. We can no longer call a spade a spade, without having some kind of label put on us.

But can you say that these new artists love God any less, through their different music, than did the monks or preachers who wrote the old hymns? No. They just have a different way of expressing it. And yes, there are certain words or phrases that are repeated. Why? Because sometimes, those are the only words that can truly convey the beauty and majesty and perfect love of God. Not all songs are the same, sir. In different contexts, a Gregorian chant Pater Noster would be more appropriate than Matt Maher's "Alive Again," which is a song of thanksgiving. And sometimes the opposite is true. Modern does not equal bad.

I hear what you're saying Royd, and I agree with it in general. It's very similar to the pop music of today (non Christian based) that is being pumped out like nuts just to get sales. Lots of it starts to sound the same after a while.

I also hear what someone else mentioned about the radio station wanting you to listen to them for 30 days. I worked for a radio station for a few years in their advertising department. Getting you to listen to them and ONLY them for 30 days is very smart. Christian radio stations are making money/profit just like other radio stations are. They sell ads and make $. Unless....this is a non for profit radio station? ::shrug:: I'd encourage anyone doing the challenge to listen to their own CD's of Christian music as well as other forms of Christian music and not just the radio station!

Either way, I can appreciate why Tanichca is doing what she's doing and I commend her for her decision and the test she'll put herself through. Good for you! Now explain to me and Em, who the rest of those bands are??

Real old folks like Royd haven't even heard of one of them!!!

Nightwish is the most famous band in it's genre (European Symphonic-Operatic female-fronted Metal) and Epica and Within Temptation are in the same genre. They have darker songs, that explore things such as innocence, returning to childhood, and love lost. Nickelback and Daughtry sing post-grunge rock, about love, life, and getting drunk. Evanescence is a cross between the two genres.

And Hip-Hop is mostly lust set to music.
