Anyone else TV-free?

Cold turkey that sounds painful. We're not TV free but this thread reminds me just how much (to much) tv we watch. I'm addicted to HGTV but whats funny is that I watch it so much I don't get around to doing anything to the house

My contract is over with Time Warner next month so I've pondered setting up a antenna and cancelling cable all together. Still need the internet though. If I can convince the DW we might even change our cell phones to Tracfones and get Vonage. I figure doing all of that will save us $1100 to $1500 a year!!

What we did was unscrew the cable from the tv. To watch it we would have to move the tv out and screw the cable back in then move the tv again, then reverse the order when we were finished. Most of the time that was too much trouble for what it was worth.

You can start by not paying for cable or satellite. Think about how much money it would save you.

Also, replace your big tv with your small one.

My husband and I have 3 tvs that aren't plugged in. The one that is plugged in is in the kitchen and it's so small it fits on the fridge.
We've never had cable or satellite and we don't miss a thing.

For those who need white noise, the radio is great! I do have the radio on, a lot, but at least I can do projects while listening instead of sitting on a couch with eyes glued to TV.

If you're the kind of person who tracks and appreciates financial detail -- approach it as a money saver and calculate all those lost work hours and dollars.

If you're more of a free-spirit who is impulsive, then get the TV out of your house. Start with ONE week -- lend it to a friend or family who is sick who needs a TV in their room or something. See what happens that week. THEN you can decide if you want it back.

We are nearly tv free. The box is still in the house (just basic reception), but ever since the writer-strike we have been very good about doing other things. In particular, we actually spend that time talking now(!).

Not sure if my husband is capable of quiting completely. But I think I'd be more than happy to. It will be interesting to see if he decides to convert over to HD when the deadline comes up. My inclination is to tell the HD promoters where they can shove their new fangled antennas. LOL Big waste of money and taxpayer funds, IMO.

For those who want to quit, I would recommend first halving your exposure and then continuing to halve it until you are where you'd rather be. I think it is easier to approach it that way. Not shock therapy (cold turkey). But that is my preferred method of quiting bad habits.

I still have my TV but use it maybe one or twice a week.I just play DVD's on it. I dont miss cable at all. who needs it? BTW I dont know if anyone said this but you can go on fox.com or ABC.com and watch the eps you missed of your fave shows.

Not to long ago we lost power here for 6 hours and obviously the tv was off for that time and my whole family played board games and stuff. I had a great time. Dont think everyone else in the house would like it though.

Well I unhooked the cable from the TV last night. All we have is antenna. Baby steps I guess. A positive outcome is my sister now spends more time in her room

It was nice setting down with the wife and talking and doing a little reading... we'll see how long it last.
