Anyone ever crossed EE's with Silkies?

I just dont see the point really....

You don't have to see a point.
My blue silkie feathered green-egger girls don't have a 'point', they just ARE.

My SFGE girls will be 3 yrs old this December.
They have never gone broody, and lay large green eggs (for their size) nearly daily except for a short break when they molt.

That's reason enough 'to be' right there (and they've been unappreciated here because I have too many projects underway).

Oh I'm not, I just realize that I am a purebred poultry enthusiast, almost to the point that I am obsessive about it, and I have to allow others to enjoy their poultry just as I do, not matter what they are crossbreeds of.

I value constructive discussion, and its clear that MichiganWoods has a distinctive plan, which doesn't require my approval nor anyone elses.

I truly just withdrew my "argument" for the sake of saving the thread. No biggie...

You do realize that Silkie feathers are the same feathers that other birds have. They dont have any special insulation. Its the same feathers, but with a different structure. It doesn't make them any more cold hardy than any other breed of poultry.

PouletsDeCajun, no worries. Sometimes I have a hard time explaining ideas that I can see clearly in my head. As I always tell my mother, just wait until I show you the finished product. Hopefully at that point you will understand what it is I am trying to explain. Besides, if there weren't breeders like you that strive to keep their breeds pure, then I wouldn't be able to run this kind of experiment. So thank you for keeping true to your breed!

Yes, I would also like to thank you PouletsDeCajun. And sorry if I was trying to.. umm.. how do I say this... "shove" you out? or prove you wrong? You are more experienced than I am. You put up a great debate here.

There have been a lot of 'purebred' poultry showers that have been asked to improve upon a breed for certain characteristics by the APA. I'd be careful when stating pure breeding is the best way to go. When chosen for these breeding projects...their stock is clean and pure and difficult to obtain. BUT if you can get your hands on some of the breeds that are bred specifically by a particular poultry breeder...it could be like pure GOLD.

Do not knock breeding and improving upon a POULTRY breed....there are so many sought after chararcteristics that poultry brings to the show...this is similar to dog showing....BUT a world apart.

I myself have never shown....but I have a breeder 'friend' who worked for Hubbards. She has been asked by the APA to breed and interbreed several species of chickens for certain characteristics. Meat quality, feather quality, egg production, winter hardiness, egg color, and temperament. IT is not an easy job...and lots of documentation for proof....but it is a respected procedure by the APA otherwise these breeders would not be tapped to perform these breeding projects.

Dipsy Doodle Doo too, your green layers gives me hope!

That is excellent! I hope to achieve similar, but in blue. (Blue happens to be my favorite color... imagine my delight when I found out there were chickens that lay blue eggs!)

cheeptrick, yes, "naturally colored" blue and green eggs around here just haven't been seen. When I tell people that I'll have chickens that will lay those colors, the first thing they ask is, "are you going to sell the eggs?". If I sell brown eggs, I will sell them for less than the local grocery stores sell them per dozen. However, none of the stores around here carry blue or green eggs, so I will compare with others like me who are raising these chickens locally to see what they charge and where they sell. I'm hoping there will be a decent return.
