I am taking a Master Gardners class at my local extension office and today we talked about worm castings and such. In the course of this conversation we branched off into the Black Soldier Fly Larve as a source of protein for my chickens. I got home and started doing some research and found the BioPod Plus as a containment system for raising these fly larve.

So thought I would inquir if any one at BYC had ever used one of these systems for raising this particular larve for their chicken? Pros, Cons, praises or complaints?

BioPods are nice, but if you're handy there are several do it yourself designs.

There's a simple one on BYC here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/bsf-larvae-operation-under-5

I made a more complicated one here: http://blacksoldierflyblog.com/biopod™plus-2nd-generation/

PeteB made another bucket unit here: http://blacksoldierflyblog.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=215

Tarvus has a great larger scale (Bug Barracks) unit here: http://s283.beta.photobucket.com/user/tarvus33991/library/Bug Barracks?start=all

marinos has a version of the Bug Barracks here: http://www.blacksoldierflyfarming.com/blog/87-filterbug-blueprint

There are several others, but that's off the top of my head. If you search "black soldier fly" on BYC you'll see other threads about them.
