What’s your opinion on Mealworms?

Wow,... really surprised at all the negative comments/feedback on mealworms and/or soldier fly. I give my chickens, Coturnix and button quail a handful several times a week as a treat. I give mine mealworms occasionally, mixed in with some scratch. I just call them into the run with a hanful to go around. (16 chickens)

I give my girls a small handful each(maybe that's a tbl. +) every single day. I have since they were chicks. They are now 4,7, and 8 years old and have never had any health issues. I did consult them on this question though, and they said more would be better!!! Lol

Hello! I love feeding our girl's soldier fly larvae . I personally prefer black soldier fly larvae because it has 75% more calcium than mealworms. They absolutely love it and it's healthy for them too! I feed about 5-6 black soldier fly larvae per hen daily. I don't raise my own mealworms though I accidentally did once when flies got into one of my feed Tupperwares, laid eggs, hatched, and then I got live mealworms that our girls loved. I usually buy dried mealworms and recommend the brand Grubs Terra. It comes in huge bags and Our girls go crazy for it.

My girls liked dried mealworm more than black soldier fly larvae. Now that I have a tiny mealworm farm, and I give them a few, (in all life stages beetle, larva and pupa) every few days. They go crazy.

I used too. Now, I don't waste my money on them. I throw them regular food on the ground and they go nuts for it. They can get their bugs in their 2 hours of free range every evening. I plan to start supplementing wild caught salmon and trout over winter for extra protein this year (have a bunch in the freezer).

Mine free range and can get way out there at times. Having mealworms and BSFL in a can that I can shake to get them back when/if needed is important. They will drop everything and come running out of the woods when they hear me calling with the can.
