Anyone give sugar beets as a treat?

We can no longer use sugar beets for deer feed in MIchigan's lower Peninsula....but they still sell 40 lb. bags of them for $3 to $3.50. Will the sugar content hurt chickens? Has anyone tried them? Just looking for cheap treats for my chicken's this winter. But I was not sure if they were safe or healthy for the girls.

I honestly don't know, but I would think it wouldn't be good for them to have the sugar content.

Hopefully the "more experienced" chickeneers will respond.

I feed it to my birds as treats in small quantities, and it takes them a long time to finish it because it's so tough.
Heck, chickens will eat anything you give to them.

Farmers used to grow beets to feed to their animals before the days of commercial feed.
