I have been reading this thread and decided to get in on it.
Interesting: my mom loves Wal Mart and thinks I am a snob for not going there. She is 69-I am 46.
my hubby and I are very much into trying to keep our money local. We have one food store here in Central Va-(between Charlottesville and Richmond) that doesn't sell anything that hasn't been made or grown within 200 miles......so of course no tomatoes this time of year! I detest Wal Mart for all of the reasons everyone else has said. Last year we did a 6 month boycot of anything made in China------

it was an eyeopener!
Needless to say---Wal Mart was included in the boycot.

That was the most difficult thing b/c just about everything is made in China!

I shop at Walmart all the time. Unfortunately here in rural vermont our choices are limited. I could/would shop downtown if I was looking for let's say, some beads from Beadniks, a bong from the Underground, some hemp clothing from the hemp clothing store, or some very expensive (albiet not useful) blown glass from the Artisan's store, maybe I could pick up some wine at the Wine Cellar or get a tattoo. I could pay $20.00 for a pair of socks at the outdoor store. Do you get where I'm going with this? We need department stores where us working folk can afford to shop and that carries things we need.

mzrea - I hear ya. I'm not sure where in Vermont you're from, but I'm in southern VT and the nearest town is full of high end outlet stores that people from NY, MA, CT etc. flock to in droves. But there is nothing for the locals to buy in terms of practical day-to-day stuff, it's difficult.

Nearest Walmart is in Rutland, 45 minutes away, and even though I would prefer to support local businesses, I got a little desperate and decided to see what was in Walmart. I was pretty dissapointed by their selection, they did have some items that were much cheaper than what I would pay in my nearest town, but when I looked at the selection of pet items, food items (not much that we use - I wanted staples like big bags of King Arthur flour, dried milk and other baking stuff, but they had mostly boxes of premade stuff), etc. I don't think I'll use the gas to drive there very often. I do buy a lot of stuff of of the internet instead of locally, because it's the only way to get anything around here.

Why do I shop at Wal-Mart? To use a quote Ive heard before.....Its the economy stupid! I get so sick of these small towns begging everyone to shop locally at Christmas when their prices are so outrageous. And to the poster who said he or she wouldnt be sad to see all Wal-Marts disappear, imagine what would happen to the economy then. You think it would be bad if the auto makers were to fold, you would not believe how bad it would be to lose Wal-Mart. Whether you like it or not, Wal-Mart is a vital part of the US and world financial situation. And to address the problems about standing in line and rude cashiers or whatever else is the problem of the day, maybe instead of trashing businesses and people we could maybe force outselves to be a little more patient.

Sorry you had bad experiences with Walmart . We have 4 super Walmart's in Lafayette , Louisiana . We never have any problems with products OUT OF STOCK . Why don't you pick up the phone and call the MAIN Walmart Distrubution Center in Bentonville, Arkansas and make them aware of how unexperienced the managers are in your area . THEY ARE NOT suppose to have the problems you mentioned as a regular problem IF AT ALL .
Walmart CAN NOT correct a problem UNLESS its brought to their attention . If I have a problem with RUDE EMPLOYEE'S , I ask for a store manager to COME to that department or to that cashier and we solve it right then and there .

Cajunlizz...I wish it was that easy. I have spoken with dept. mgrs. about shortages and discontinued items, but it doesn't seem to help. I haven't gone to the 'higher-ups', though. May have to take your advice and keep trying.
It seems that the WM and the Super WM seem to have different philosopohies. When "Sam" was alive, WM seemed to care about the customers and family values...now, SWM seems to care more about the almighty dollar. Don't get me wrong - in today's economy, savings is important...but can't you provide savings while keeping customer needs and service at the forefront??

I vote we boycot all of these large chains, and go back to a barter system!
